Artist History
The Unonymus Inc Bio
If you only see one live act this year, than the act to see is Unonymus Inc. Taj Johnson and Aaron Hernandez are two
seventeen year old rappers based in Yellowknife. The two have been rapping together for three years now and get stronger
and better as the years go by. Three years ago, there was were five members in titled under a different group name and only
did cover songs The five later diminished to two, with a new name, new attitude and their own new songs. Aaron Hernandez
has written over sixteen original songs over the past year, which are featured on their two part demo C.D. titled the "LOST
SCRIPTURES". Part one was released in Nov. of '97 Part two was released in Apr.'98. This CD was
written, produced and manufactured by Unonymus Inc. with the aid of fellow seventeen year old Abe Tessema who was
responsible for both CD covers. This demo CD has already been heard all across the nation, from east coast of Toronto to the
west coast of Vancouver. Also featured on two of the songs are female vocalists, Margaret Bell and Jesse Miller.
Unonymus Inc. presents electric, crowd pleasing proformances at every appearance. Ask anyone who attended the "Much
Music Video Dance Party" and then ask who was the crowd favorite.
Hip Hop is rising fast in Yellowknife. Just three or four years ago, hip hop almost seemed rare in this town. The
local teenagers were heavly into punk and alternative music. But now in 1998, hip hop is alive and is more popular amongst the
teens and is mostly the choice of music. Although technically not the first northern rappers, Unonymus feel that they are the
first real hip hop artist to take the stage north of sixty. Unonymus may just become next up and
coming northern artists to break through. With the right direction, Unonymus may no longer be ANONYMOUS anymore |

Press Reviews
New U Inc. CD phat!
Several friends and I sat around last weekend for first listen of Unonymus Inc.'s new CD, U2K:
Unfamiliar Territory (U Inc is, of course Taj Johnson and Aaron Hernadez).
Right off the hop, I was berated for still having the shrink-wrap plastic on the CD. I was informed
that it was downright criminal that I hadn't yet listened to this creation with its already growing
reputation.
People were already intimating that it was simply outstanding, impecably professional and this
said with a slight tone of surprise in their voices and, oddly, pride.
I imagine the pride stems from the fact that this indenpant Yellowknife production is clearly
world-calibre. U2K can, and I have no doubt it will, hold its own in the wider world.
The album, rap with fine melding of other musical influences such as funk, rock and dance, blows
a lot of what I've been listening to lately right out of the water.
The rhythms are engaging, rich and layered. A few listens will clue you into the multitude of
sounds intricately woven together.
There's a lot of energy on this recording, lots of good energy on this recording. Before you know
it you're unconsciously moving to its beat.
Some of my favourite songs are those that mixeed the straight rapping vocal work that could be
categorized as acual singing: especially in Actin' a Fool, for example, which highlights the voices
of Danielle O'Neill, Jane McDemott and Natacha Saravanja. The lilting softness of female voices
juxtaposed with the very male voices creates an addictive sound.
O'Neill adds her lovely voice to two other songs, quite enhancing the overall production.
U2K was mostly recorded at Big Daddy Productions' studio here in yellowknife. Two songs were
recorded at Spiritwalker Productions. Several locals helped out, besides Jeff Lyons and Efren
Pereira, and they are G-Force, Graham Guest, Karen Dacyshyn and Iza Papawacki.
I say run out and buy this one. If I was in the habit of rating with stars I'd give it five out of five.
It's worth every penny and probably more. Then, when you see them on Much Music, you can say
you have THAT recording. By: Michele LeTourneau Norhtern News Services |
