Press Reviews
While the issue of whether or not white men can jump is still being debated on basketball courts across the United States, one thing is for certain: they can jam. If you need proof, just pick up Thanks For the Ride Albert, the self-produced debut from Indiana's newest addition to the music scene, Montefisto, and let these guys school you on how funk should be done.
You want to know what they sound like? Imagine if the Beastie Boys were invited to take a ride in George Clinton's Mothership…
With their eclectic blend of funk, acid-jazz, rock, and hip-hop these guys are not going to be forgotten. When they take the stage, they are nothing short of jungle snipers…you have no idea what to expect. Fortunately, everyone is pleasantly surprised as they open up with their first song, and by the end of the set, there is not a foot in the house that isn't tapping or an eye not glued onto the stage. Whether they are playing original songs or funking-up old classics, these guys know how to do it right.
Montefisto is the product of four, obviously very talented, musicians. Vocalist and trumpeter Christopher Smith never falls short of an amazing delivery. Whether he is rhyming, singing, or playing horn, he comes on strong…and stays there. Fellow singer/guitar player/keyboardist Adam Wheeler is a solid force within the quartet. His rhyme skills are second to none and his confidence is infectious. The way the two front men, Wheeler and Smith, rhyme together is astounding. Their telepathic trade-offs are not only amusing, but work on so many levels, that you can listen to the same song twice, but get a different message. It's genius.
Bass player and stoic entity, Ira Smith, doesn't need to jump around or participate in any of the fuss to demonstrate his talent. He stands on the left and GROOVES. Drummer Jason Lakes keeps everyone together with his expert timing and flawless performance.
Montefisto is no flash in the pan; you've got my word and my money on that. They may be from Indiana, the state that spawned Tito Jackson and hockey hair, but it's comforting to know that elementary school phonic skills worked for somebody.
Check em out, because it won't be long before every kid on your block knows who they are….
