Clockwork GraceCLOCKWORK GRACECritic: Tommy Siegel, sophomore at Douglas Freeman High SchoolCritic's rating: ****Details: Feb. 23 at the Three Chopt Sports Grill, $5Type of music: Jazzy rock/funky bluesWeb site: http://home.sprintmail.com/~fbfrostAlthough the group is less than 6-months-old, Clockwork Grace put on a great show last Friday night. Its hour-long set, made up mostly of covers and a couple of original songs, was absolutely fantastic. Probably the most talented young musicians in the area, Charles Glenn (guitar), inSync staffer Stephen Frost (bass and keyboards) and Allen Sleeman (drums) make a great trio. Charles' amazingly fast riffs do justice to all the songs the trio plays. His speed is remarkable, and I'm sure he could play scales up and down the neck of his guitar for days. Stephen defies the usual limitations of the bass in rock. Instead of being "the extra band member," which often happens to bassists, Stephen is a necessary, vital source for the band. He keeps the rhythm intact, restores the melody when necessary and solos and slaps his way to bass salvation. Allen is a fantastic drummer, treating his drum set more like a rhythmic weapon than a metronome. The show: Highlights of the set included tasteful renditions of Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains the Same," "Dazed and Confused" and "Immigrant Song." Also interesting was the unique combination of U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday," which flowed into the solo segment of "Stairway to Heaven." Other highlights included a funky rendition of the Red Hot Chili Pepper's "Aeroplane" and a playful cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Fire," which transformed into "Wipeout." Michael Auman (of Dandy Otto), who joined the three as a guest musician, playing congas for a portion of the set and was a worthwhile addition.Bound for success: Be on the lookout for these guys. They're on to something, and it's a pleasure to watch it unfold live. They are a strong example of what a great rock band should be. Their flyers have littered the halls these past two weeks, advertising a concert at the Three Chopt Sports Grille. But who exactly IS Clockwork Grace? .....The "jazzy rock and funky blues" band is made of two Godwin students, Stephen Frost and Allen Sleeman, and one Governor’s school student, Charles Glenn......"We sound a bit like Led Zeppelin, but our jazz and funk influences really shine through," the bassist, Stephen Frost said. He also named James Brown, old Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jaco Pastorius, Miles Davis, and Bill Watrous as major influences on the band......The band has been together since October, when they added Glenn as the guitarist. But before then, Sleeman and Frost had been playing together for three years. They performed at places such as Memphis BBQ, Ukrop’s, and various parties. Their band members changed constantly, but they still remain true to their music......When I’m up there, nobody else exists but the band . . . I never see the audience, I never have, and applaud doesn’t even enter into my ears," Frost said of their concerts together......Glenn was not an easy guitarist to find, though. Frost saw him play at a concert one day, and was amazed. He ended up hunting him down, after a three month long search. The band is currently looking for a lead singer, but as for now, they are an all instrumental band. Look for them to be playing at Three Chopt Sports Grille again on Friday, February 23.
