    Press Reviews
OK, so rock and roll crossed with piracy may seem like an ill-concieved notion at first, but as High Concept, it's certainly as validan idea as any of its successful predecessors: rock meets second-rate horror flick (the Misfits), rock meets unfortunate hairstyle(the B-52's) or the ever popular rock meets J.R.R. Tolkien (Jethro Tull). On its latest, "Once Upon a Wave," the crew of the good ship Pirate Jenny - led by fearless mariner (and part time graphics artistfor the Oregonian) Kevin Hendrickson, his bosom bos'n Paul Iannotti, Ron Lee and John Morgan fire musical shots across the bowwith above average accuracy.Using the thematic device of bloodthirsty characters they've created (Scabby the Seaman, the Night Watchman and CaptainSlaymore) to frame a variety of musical genres, Pirate Jenny sails the high seas of cheese with spirit and style. Along with atraditional sea shanty of "The Loneliest Sailor," P.J. offers up approaches a diverse as the show tune refrain of the title track, some heavy metal stomps ("Strap on your courage"), epic anthems that recall the sweeping grandness of Ziggy Stardust-eraBowie ("Scabby & Captain Slaymore") and the '60s garage rave-up of "cold chain (Shackle Reaction)."Mind you, it's not all plank walking, grog drinking and the endless search for booty. On "Sensitive Guy," Scabby actually owns upto "Drinking cappuccino while the others drink rum," and admits that, "A man that shows his feelings gets terrorized at sea." Oh,cry us an ocean, New Age rogue! So, the Pirates of Penzance they're not, but on "Once Upon a Wave," Pirate Jenny proves it's got the right stuff in all the wrongways. Yarrgggh! Consider your timbers shivered, mateys.-Curt Schultz, The Oregonian (May, 1999)
