Press Reviews
ON THEIR WAY UP By Kristy Tanksley I was going to my favorite coffee house (the Metaphor Cafe in Escondido) one day, and a poster with a cute little smiling, flying, guitar playing chipmunky animal caught my eye. The smiling image made me wonder who this Jody & Company Band was. I happened to notice that they were playing there that night, so I went back to catch the show.Watching them set up, I thought, ”It’s probably Another wanna-be, no talent, band.” What a pleasant surprise when they began to play. First of all, there are four members of the band: Three of which are jokingly referred to as, “Company Band”, and of course, Jody (hence the name). Jody is a guy by the way. Like others, I mistook Mandi, who plays synthesizer, for Jody. The biggest shock was that this quartet plays some very fine music.Jody, the group leader, plays a 10 string guitar - not 12. Some would ask, “To what purpose? A twelve string is still a twelve string.” However, this isn’t the case here. He has developed a style of playing between the strings so that the guitar sounds like a regular six string. During the song, he can change the sound by adding the octaves, making the 12 string sound for variety. There were times during the evening when I thought there were two or three guitars on stage. Jody plays the twelve string guitar - excuse me TEN string- mixing classical, folk and rock styles to produce very pleasing and sometimes intricate arrangements to accompany the vocals. I have never heard a 12 string played this well and with such finesse. This guy could teach Leo Kotke a thing or two.The accompaniments alone would be worth hearing, but the real kicker to this group is that the vocals are just as amazing. Jody’s voice has a wide range - (A in the bass clef to an A above the treble clef, for those musically inclined) and it’s definitely trained. During the Hollies hit, The Air That I Breathe, he manages to sing very long phrases without coming up for air. His voice quality is like a male Judy Collins: Very clear and expressive. Mandi sings excellent backup, complementing the team.Jody, had been doing a solo act for years, he explained after the show, until he decided to form the band. Mandi joined adding keyboards, flute, tambourine and backup vocals. Tony, the bassist, came next, allowing Mandi to utilize her keyboard for more than just a bass. Last, but not least, Rob joined them with his djembe which compliment the acoustic sounds of this highly talented quartet.Jody & Company Band not only play excellently composed originals, but selected 70’s pop tunes and a lot of very well done Beatles songs. They don’t always tell their audiences which songs he wrote and which are covers but unlike some songwriters, it’s not easy to tell the difference. Even the musical styles differ from song to song. One of his newest pieces, Sometimes I Feel, has a pop sound to it. Dance with me is another definite VH-1 or MTV kind of song. Chi Town Lady is crossover country rock style and It Must Be Nice, a waltz tempo ballad, are two of their most requested songs. The parody, A Bigger Bag of Bagels, is another audience favorite. Jody & Company Band just finished their first CD together. It has five of their most requested tunes.Under the logo of Jody & Company Band are the words, “Good Time Music and Fun”. It’s definitely that and a whole lot more. I give this group two “thumbs up” and recommend everyone go see them. It’s refreshing to see a class act, from their professional attitude, the tasteful musical arrangements, down to the way they talk and dress. (No raggedy jeans and T-shirts here.) Their audiences range from teenagers to senior citizens. Truly a group on their way up. Catch them before it costs you a lot more than just the price of a cup of coffee to see them.Jody & Company Band are appearing every other Tuesday night at the Metaphor Cafe`, 258 East 2nd Avenue, in Escondido California. Give the Cafe` a call at (760)489-8890 to find out which Tuesday they are there. You can get an E-Mail gig list by subscribing at: www.jodyandcompany.com. |
