    Artist History
" Ginger and I were in a very bad explosion in 1969,where we almost lostour lives "Carol told us. "We were on stage in New York, and the clubexploded....and we were almost killed. Now after that, I was still oncrutches, I went to a party and I ran into this book and I turned Ginger onto it. We both got very into it. And, then we were booked in Florida after wegot back on our feet. We had to wait for the forth member, who was reallyinjured bad. We had to wait a year for her to get out of the hospital. So wewent down there, and it ALL happened there- the spiritual experience, PLUS this ( the book ) we already had run into and it even got more-You know, brought it all out. And it was like leading towards something, you know. Andthen we formed a group called Seven Fold Gift. And it was for a year that weperformed in a church, every Friday, on the alter, no money, nothing- andpeople used to come in and see us, you know, they'd sit in the pews.. And wewere like preparing all the song, getting them all together, and that's whenwe decided to form ISIS, an all-woman group. After all that, after a year anda half of starving to death......we ended that group........Seven Fold Giftwas a mixed group, men and women. We had a harp, and a pipe organ, you know,And people didn't understand that at all, it was a whole different sound- Itwas a year and a half before ah Mahavishnu-type,And that's the type of groupit was. you know people couldn't understand." The book which became animportant part of Carol and Ginger's new goal, was written and illustrated in1925 by Randolph Stevens, a musician, who according to witnesses, receivedthe entire book in a spiritual occurrence that used him as a medium. " noerasures or anything." It is called The Book of Truth, or The Voice ofOsiris, and at this point is rather rare and difficult to come by. The "spiritual experience" happened to Carol and Ginger on the beach offFort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1970. " It was a very heavy spiritual trip thather and I went through," said Carol after Ginger first mentioned the "experience." " You know, we got tunes from the sky, tunes from the ocean,"Ginger continued, with Carol interjecting, "Right, Servant Savior-" "And everything sort of coordinated naturally with this book," addedGinger, going on to tell us of many re-occurring "co-incidental" phenomena.Like, how they just happened to be photographed for their debut album by JonStevens on the very same day that---- almost half a century previous, onFebruary 11th, 1925----- Randolph Stevens completed the drawings for the book. " you know," Ginger went on, "That club that took us to Floridaalso------ The very night that we ended is the very night that club closed. We went back the next day, we wanted to bring some books to one of theowners.....and it was boarded up, for sale. The very club that brought us toFlorida, which was a big part of bringing on this experience....was likeclosed.... We just finished packing our stuff and instantly (snaps finger) itwas closed, boarded up and everything. Like we said " Oohhh, this can't be."" the whole thing was boarded up," Carol recollected in almostdisbelief. " It was a night club in Florida. Big. In Fort Lauderdale. BIG Imean big stars, Joe Namathe was there..... I don't know what happened. Thatclub was jammed every night that we played. It was the weirdest thing thatever happened. You know, it was like Twilight Zone----- Like we never playedthere And we did. For eight weeks we were there."Now, they were ISIS, and we were all sitting poolside atop the ContinentalHyatt house on the sunset Strip. It was a very pleasant Saturday afternoon aswarm desert air bathed the Los Angeles basin with blue heavens andtemperatures that hovered comfortably around eighty. Carol MacDonald went intoan easy smile and reminisced enthusiastically about the group's West Coastdebut performance the night before. " That's great---- the audience wasfabulous---- I couldn't believe it! I was all prepared for--- God knowswhat----- cause they didn't know us. They never heard of ISIS, so I figured,look----we'll get off ourselves on stage with one another. I was all readyfor that. We talked about eye contact and getting into it ourselves. So---when they stood up and got----- you know----started clapping andeverything---- it was great. It made it even better for us because we werealready into each other and then, with all that----- it was really good. " Really good" however, may have been a bit modest. ISIS had flownacross the nation for this sole performance, interrupting momentarily work ontheir first album, then in progress at Ultra-Sonic Studios in New York's LandIsland suburb of Hampstead. And, here in Hollywood's Aquarius Theatre, thistriumph had been taped for national airing some three weeks later on ABC TV'sIn Concert. Hardly the usual break for a relatively unknown newcomer. But then, Isis was already well establishing themselves as hardly the usual newcomer. Asimportant as this " break " may have seemed, it was actually just another step in that somewhat more phenomenal destiny. This may have already been sensed by some of the superstarproducers who wanted to cut Isis' first album. When the heavily committedschedules of such as Richard Perry ( Ringo ) and Jimmy Miller ( RollingStones & Traffic ) wouldn't allow them the flexibility to meet Isis'recording desires, veteran producer George " Shadow" Morton " suddenly "popped up and everything " just clicked ." Firstdealing with Capitol Records, Isis was eventually signed up by BuddhaRecords----- the " bubblegum " label that had also first given us CaptainBeefheart $ His Magic Band. To the group's later astonishment, it was learnedthat the contract had been signed even before anyone at Buddha knew whattheir lyrics were about. And this at the height of the " vinyl crisis ". Since the album's late spring release, the fast pace has progressed continuously as the grouphas knocked 'em out all over the North American continent in major one-nighters with hit-laden Three Dog Night and T- Rex. can so much excitement and fateful dramaticsbe merely " good luck ?" it's true that Isis may be mostimmediately attention-worthy simply because of the all female composition oftheir band. And, of course, their music itself is quite arresting. Unlikeother all-female bands, they are not just another carbon copy of a typicallygood male rock-n-roll group. Isis stands out as quite musically legitimateand adventuresome in the most creative traditions. Yet, as impressive as theresults are, the true inner strength of this group lies in the commitmentcollectively focused upon Carol and Ginger's heavy experience. The members ofIsis all know that their destiny is bigger than them. They don't feel theiron a " Crusade ," but they are well aware that theirs' is a purposefuljourney that'll have meaningful effects not only upon their individual lives, but those of a lot others as well.
