    Artist description
Somewhere along the line that crosses New York to New Jersey, the West Side Highway vs. the New Jersey Turnpike, SUPERTHRIVE was born. Four people brought together to raise a fist at life and "not go silent into that goodnight". That's what the music of Superthrive is all about. Giving a little shake to your soul & letting you into a world where the lines of right & wrong blur into patches of grey, where every moment of life is grasped with TWO FULL HANDS. Superthrive has just released a second album, SEVEN SONGS FOR SINNERS. Recorded in the cement basement surroundings of the famous Loho Studios. Famous to the musicians who thrive on a modern sound, a new scene. Where bands like Helmet, Honkey Toast, Toilet Boys and Handsome, to name a few, got their start. For Superthrive, it all began at Loho. Producer V.L. began with Superthrive at their core, their garage rehearsal room. From there they gradually recorded layers of dripping sweet sounds. Thick and Dark, just the way they like their whiskey.

    Artist History
Raku: I started playing with Sue [guitar] and Matt [guitar and vocals] around 1993, when their old drummer left the band. They were called Slang Girl back then. Then around 1994 the original bass player left, and the mighty Jim Slade appeared at our door and wouldn't leave. So we came up with a new name, something we could all relate to, and started playing in front of whoever was crazy enough to have us. And there are a lot of crazy bastards out there, which is a good thing.

VINCEBUS ERUPTUM - Heavy-Phych Music Magazine - N.4SUPERTHRIVE - SEVEN SONGS FOR SINNERS:BEARD OF STARS - 2000Re-released by Italy's Beard of Stars Records, this is Superthrive's critically acclaimed sophomore effort, which came out last March as a self-produced mini CD, their debut album being 1996 "Are You a Lover." A local favourite at famed New York City venues, from The Continental to CBGB's, Superthrive kinda reminds me of Solace (incidentally, both bands hail from New Jersey): they play a type of contemporary groove metal with a mood of "controlled rage," in the sense that their sheer aggressiveness is counterbalanced by excellent musicianship. An unmistakable DIY attitude and thought-provoking lyrics are also among their salient features. The record is opened by "Road Rage," which stuns the listener with its tribal rhythms, thick riffing, and corrosive but clean vocals. Next comes "Cowboy Cocktail," which incorporates some odd effects and screaming guitar parts, coming across as a Soundgarden-like track with a punk-metal edge to it. The lyrics to "Buffalo Bill" are about serial killers, and the song is an intense exercise of psychedelic metal in the vague vein of Tool, whereas "Peachy" blends together Solace and Tool in a whirlwind of gloomy electricity. "Cunanan" is inspired by Italian designer Gianni Versace's murderer and has a syncopated rhythmic pattern with some hip-hop influences; "Precious" recalls early Soundgarden, but with a rawer approach, and the overall song structure of "Snakes" takes us back to Mind Funk's crucial debut album of almost a decade ago, not to mention the spoken-word break in Rollins style. These guys need some more time to reach the full artistic growth, but then their music is likely to become a true landmark in the modern metal scene for years to come. Needless to say, Superthrive has a huge selling potential, and it's a fact that they've had majors like Geffen, A&M, and Interscope knocking at their door so far. Yet they've decided to stick to their underground ethic and opted for a deal with indie label Bear of Stars. Well done, brothers!- Costantino Andruzzi --- KERRANG - SUPERTHRIVE Seven Songs For Sinners(Beard Of Stars) - KKK Promising alt-metal debut with stacks of guitars. ONE OF an increasing number of US bands who have been carving a reputation for themselves through internet sites such as Napster, Superthrive here present their first slice of CD proper-a gruelling, riff-laden trip into the seedy backyard of alternative metal. The sense of desolation and waste invoked by all seven tracks immediately draws a comparison with Joy Division, but the umpalatable yet strangely mesmerising grooves are far more heavy duty and metallic. Rarely is the band's spirit better captured than during 'Peachy' when vocalist Matt roars 'Everything's perfect, everything's fine' in a gutar drenched wash of irony and despair. Hard going it may be, but Superthrive have hit on a compelling formula that' ll keep your attention. (Alistair Lawrence) KERRANG 25/11/00
