Press Reviews
My wife and I don't get out much it seems...so when we get a night to ourselves to explore things musical, we tend to bounce around...which isn't a bad thing: variety IS the spice of life, and all...Saturday, February Tenth began for us at 9pm at Spinaker's in Hamden with Acoustic Soup. Acoustic Soup is a duo made up of Al and Steve, and as cover bands go, they're very good. Their song choices are varied and eclectic (we heard a Dave Matthews song and a Commodores song in the same set, yikes!), their voices blend well and Steve's lead guitar work is tasteful and interesting. BUT...I must admit, something deep inside me can't sit in a room with Al without longing to hear his original songs. And I'm not just saying that because Al Raebuck is a friend of mine. Al's original songs are much more catchy and cool than any lame cover song he might have the itch to do. Acoustic Soup is certainly worth seeing any night of the week, but if you see the name AL RAEBUCK in the Happenings section of the New Haven Advocate, drop everything and go to the show. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Excerpt taken from press release put out by Frank Critelli, Host of "Third Thursday" series at Brewed Awakening, Hamden CTBy Frank CritelliMarch 15th, 2001 - AL RAEBUCK: Respect has come piecemeal for Al. While attaining success in the various cover bands he has fronted (COMMON GROUND, BETTER MOUSETRAP, ACOUSTIC SOUP), Al's original material, high-profile opening slots (Little Feat, Lisa Loeb) and most recently, memorable performances at Steve Rodgers' Space and at cafe nine's Beatnik 2000, have started a bit of a buzz in the underground. His songs are meaningful, his vocals are first-rate and his use of alternate tunings makes his guitar work clean and interesting. If you have not seen nor heard of Al Raebuck, this is your change... don't blow it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Excerpt taken from New haven Advocate's "Music Notes" section, week of 3/29/01By Chris BuskeyFeatured performer Al Raebuck is perhaps best known for his work in various cover acts, including the highly popular Acoustic Soup. Raebuck freed his musical soul from the bonds of "Margaritaville" and "Forever in Blue Jeans" and poured his heart out with a fine set of original songs. The voice, the songs, the guitar playing were all good, and not once did anyone yell the words "Free" and "Bird." The experience seemed almost redemptive. And while I don't wish for Raebuck to cast aside his other commitments (after all, cover bands make a lot of money), I do hope he continues on this new musical path. |
