The Spotlight Chart (Top-Selling St. Louis Area Artist at Local Record Stores)Week March 13,1994 Debut entry Twice Da "G "- To Be a GTwice Da GSt Louis' streets can be as rough as any other urban hood, but Twice Da" G" presents the hardcore reality while trying to keep a positive attitude. This St. Louis duo consist of MC's Gregory Williams (aka KILL/OG) and Maurice Pankins (aka NSG), who have been battling in their neighborhoods for years, but with microphones, not guns. These deuce G's show a Unique hip-hop flavor with technique of rhyming several styles with "non-stop fury and versatility.Their new release To Be A G is available on Birthright Records, 4601 Korte Ave., St. Louis, MO 63115. RMS showcase: Saturday, Apr. 9, the Red Sea, 9 pm.1994 Spotlight Readers Poll Voted #1 "Best Rap/Hip-Hop Band"Voted in the top 5 "Next St. Louis band to get signed to a record deal"Voted in the top 5 "Best Local/Regional Release (from the past year)" To Be a GThe core members of Twice the G, MCs Kill//OG and NSG began their rap careers in 1986 battling fellow MCs from their neighborhoods and high schools. Since then the duo has climbed to the top of the underground hip-hop circuit, having just won the Best Rap/Hip-Hop Band.Looking to the future, MC NSG says " In '95 Twice Da G will continue to focus on lyrics that will uplift awareness of the problems in our community and what can be done to solve them. " The plight of urban youth in America is a deep concern of the band members. "We focus on the youth because the youth are our future." "We don't want our youth to grow up as we did- in broken homes, poverty, drug infested neighborhoods and despair- we want to make people realize what is going on and help guide our youth out of this messed-up path before we loose another generation."However, Twice Da G us more than lyrics and a message, NSG describes it music as "phat beats and chest-beating, bass-kicking funk that you like to pump in your truck." Hip-hop fans and curious onlookers should note that Twice Da G is available at local record stores on Birthright Records.--MICHAEL ROSEXPO PAGES Twice Da GTwice Da G was awarded the Best Rap Act Award in the Spotlight Magazine Music Awards. Maurice Pankins (aka "NSG"), and Gregory Williams(aka "Killer/OG") describe their music as "Reality Rap", conveying a message of street knowledge and knowledge of self. They have opened for such acts as Curious and Conscious Daughter and other Reggae and Rap groups, and can currently be seen at Felix's (1405 Washington) as well as X-Rays in St. Peters. Twice Da G performed at this years' KOCO Festin Chicago, and was part of the "Best of St. Louis' Rap" performing in the Mississippi River Music Festival (at Felix's) September 10.Point Blank MediaBirthright Records: Independent on the move St. Louis, MO. based independent record label Birthright Records is making major noise with it's independent marked, and distributed music. Birthright is doing what a lot of us hip-hop need to do, control how our music is distributed . Their current release Twice Da G, is one of the top - selling releases in Missouri. Twice Da G, had their debut release performance February 5th. They got such great reviews , they were invited to perform with East Coast Rapper Kurious. Also, what’s even better is the label is being run by a lady by the name of "Diane D-Mix" Coleman. Being run by a woman should give a new perspective on the Hip= Hop scene since so few women run their own labels. I'm sure we'll be hearing more from the artist, and Birthright Records.Spotlight MagazineJuly 1994From professional sports teams to quality-of -life ratings, St. Louis seems to have an obsession with keeping up with other cities. Well Compton, Calif., may have put gangsta rap on the map, but gangs drugs and drive-by shootings are a sad fact all across America. So it's no surprise that our city has spawned its own gangsta rappers, among them the duo known as Twice Da G.This debut cassette release charts what has become an oddly familiar yet still disturbing nightmare urban landscape- a place where hustlers rule, dope gets brought and sold, curses and bullets fly freely and only the strong survive. Both Maurice "NSG" Pankins and Gregory "Kill OG" Williams have the energy and urgency that call to mind life in a place that can turn into a free fire zone at any minute. They express themselves in a clipped, staccato style often reminiscent of gangsta godfather Ice Cube, but also throw in goofs like "40 oz Jeannie" and "Panty Hose" to lighten up a bit from time to time. For the most part, the themes are familiar, and some of the rhymes and beats are derivative. But there are also ear-grabbing hooks in cuts such as " No Justice, No Peace, No Love", and "Never Hittin'Fo-Trey" that show a more personal style in the process of emerging. And producer Delta Dre' seems to have the jeep-mix styles down pat" witness the woofer-destroying bass drum part on "First Chapter"A lot of people would just as soon pretend that gangsta rap (and the social condition that spawned it) didn't exist. But switching off Rick & Karen's nightly news reports of murder and mayhem won't make crime go away.If you’re a fan of gangsta rap To Be a G is a mostly successful local example of the style. (Why send those dollars to Compton? Keep'm here in St. Louis!). And if you one of those folks who wish it would all just go away, think of this tape as another kind of news report- one that shows a side of the Gateway City that the Civic Progress fat cats would probably just as soon not contemplate. The Scene - St Louis Community College Rap group gets twice the respectby Derrell Carter of The Scene StaffRap Artist come a dime a dozen. Some with endless lyrics about gangsta violence. Others with pimping-type antics. This makes it hard to recognize those who stand up with a message worth hearing something positive.Rap group Twice Da G won the 1994 Riverfront Times Slammy award for Best Local Rap Artist. The group was also recognized for Best Local/Regional Release.Group leader Maurice "NSG", a Forest Park nursing major, said the awards are great Recognition for the groups achievements. However, he doesn't feel it puts him shoulders above other artist in the community."he award lets us know we've achieved something" he said. "But other rappers deserve it too. I feel (rappers) should make our own awards to recognize each other, cause we're all in it together."Twice Da G came about when Pankins, known as NSG, and Kill OG teamed up in early 1994 and released 2 be a G, on Birthright Records, a local record label in north St. Louis. NSG said be came up with the concept Twice Da G as a way to separate himself from the "madness" of the political and social systems created by white supremacist ideas.(For those who don't follow rap, "G" has a number of different meanings. NSG stands for "Never Sweating Genocide" The "G" in Twice Da G stands for "Gods," referring to knowledge.)"We have to look at life from a higher level," he said "As Blacks, we're all G's cause we're all the same. Although we're from different places or avenues of life , our paths cross each other leading in the same direction. Kill OG left the group soon after the release for personal reasons."It was a group decision that he left the group,"Birthright" president and founder Diane Coleman said. "But there is still love between Kill OG and the Birthright family."Laclede Town native Greg Jarrett, Known as Buddy, then joined the group and created a "natural vibe" between him and NSG""I knew the group was going to go somewhere when I joined, but I didn't think it would be this fast. he said. Buddy said the group tries to send messages that can benefit the listeners."We want our songs to be useful to the listener," he said "Our focus is not to give the wrong impression about life, but to get people to recognize where they're from, where they're at and where they're going.NSG said he's not worried about the fame or monetary gain of rapping, Instead, Twice the "G" focuses on getting their point across to listeners."Rap has been a benefit and helped me advance in life but I'm not looking for the fame it brings," he said. "I want what I kick to be accepted by my people so I can represent them correctly.Coleman said Twice Da G has also been recognized in Right On magazine as "One of the top ten artist on the rise nationally.""They are No. 8 in the nation for their song 1st Chapter,' which puts then up there with Group Home, Top authority and Dana Dane.NSG said the first release was "a way to get rid of the jitters. But new things have happened since then, and everything is twice the better."The Riverfront Times December 7-13, 1994Best Local Rap Artist Two is better than one, if the RFT readers are to be believed. They voted in local crew Twice Da G as 1994's Slammy winner in the Best Local Rap Artist category, besting a close competition with runners-up In Limbo and MOdu Crew ( who tied for second place). Romie Rome and Concept of A.L.P.S complete the top five.1. Twice Da "G"2. InLimbo (tie)3. MODU Crew (tie)4. Romie Rome5. Concept of A.L.P.S.
