    Artist History
The "Sands of Time" began a journey in Belleville, Ontario and became the "Youngest Band to Tour Canada" in the 60's with the line up of Eric Baragar, Michael Goettler, Steve Smith, Tim Campbell and Dave Conley. The band's hit single, "I’ve Got a Feeling" charted:#2 on the Canadian charts in 1970 while scoring a record high 93 points on the Maple Leaf System before Canadian Content and receiving a Gavin Pick in the U.S.The pop/rock musical group began as a typical garage band called, "Ken and the Continentals" with Ted Elvins, Tim Campbell, Eric Baragar on guitars and vocals, Al O'Hara on drums, Dennis Baragar on piano and Ken Williams on bass. Ken Williams traded in his bass guitar to become the manager for the group, which he renamed, the "Sands of Time". Michael Goettler replaced Ken on bass.Later, Vernon Martin would replace Ted Elvins on lead vocals and the band took on a musical blend between "British Invasion" and "Rhythm 'n Blues". When Al O'Hara, Vernon Martin and Dennis Baragar left, the band became a vocal group, featuring 5-part harmonies, with the addition of Dave Conley on keyboards and vocals and Steve Smith on drums and vocals. This line up developed into a recording act and the "Youngest Band to Tour Canada". The "Sands of Time" eventually moved to the Canadian music centre of Toronto during the Yorkville days. In 1971 they recorded their first album in Toronto and Montreal for the U.S. National General Records label. Although a producer was called in from Los Angeles, his poor health in the cold Canadian winter forced him to return prematurely. The band was left to produce its’ own first album! The band’s Canadian label, MTCC ran into financial difficulties and the self produced album was never released. The Sands of Time left Toronto and returned home to Belleville without Dave Conley and evolved into a 4-piece progressive "country rock" act. Eventually, band members slowly drifted apart and the Sands disbanded with Steve and Tim leaving to join the band, "Boojum" and Eric pursuing a solo career. In 1977, Eric built a basement studio that grew into a project studio. Most of the original members of the "Sands of Time" returned to Belleville to form a new group, "Bentwood Rocker". On May 4th & 5th, 2001 the Sands of Time reunite to perform at benefit concert with all the original members of the group... now that is a time capsule !!!

The Sands of Time reunite for benefitby LeeAnne VanceBelleville - One of this area's premier sixties rock groups is reuniting for an Alzheimer's fund raiser. The Sands of Time is in rehearsals for two May performances, that promise to be a blast from the past. "The, whole show is built on memories," Eric Baragar, who plays guitar for Sands, says. "It's retro." It's been 30 years since The Sands of Time - who had a single that went to number two on the Canadian music charts - took the stage. Back in the day Baragar, Michael Goettler (bass), Tim Campbell (guitar), Dave Conley (keyboard), and Steve Smith (drums) were billed as the youngest band to tour Canada. The guys cut their teeth playing schools and packed halls in places like Point Anne and Read, Melrose and Frankford. The Tiki Club a teen, hangout at the east end plaza booked out-of- town bands; - for hometown boys dreaming of making it in the music business it was a case study in how to be a rock group. "We learned by watching the bands from Toronto," Eric adrnits. The guys would check out the equipment, "hang off the stage," and figure out what worked live.It was a much different time."There were two guitar teachers in town when I grew up," Eric says. "And one of them was my grandfather."Students were instructed on songs like Oh! Sifsannah when most of them really wanted to figure out how the latest Beatles song was played. There weren't any local recording studios and only a handful of places to record in Toronto. It was at RCA studios in Toronto that the band recorded their single I've Got A Feeling. The single was top ten on the Canadian Charts in a day when Canadian content rules didn't exist.Sands of Time toured the country playing alongside bands like the Guess Who and eventually moved to Toronto. After a record deal turned sour in the early 1970s the band split up. But the guys never gave up on music. When one of the band members hit a milestone birthday (okay twist the arm, it was Eric and it was the one that comes after 49) his wife threw a party. The guys from the band were there along with a house full of local musicians including Tim Hunt, who has since become the band's new manager.Tim [Hunt] said,"I've never seen the Sands of Time perform,"' Eric recalls - that was last year and it put the wheels in in motion for a reunion. The guys got together a few days later and committed to the project. For Tim Campbell it was a deja vu moment. "I walked away from that meeting and realized that after thirty years I was back in the Sands of Time again." The band looked through old set lists Eric had luckily kept and started to build their show. Other members who also played in the Sands of Tirne - Al O'Hara, Ted Elvins, Vernon Martin, and Dennis Baragar - will also be featured at the Centennial Secondary School show. Campbell also acknowledges the important role then manager Ken Williams (yes you know him as I Ken the real estate agent now) played in the band's success. "Ken was like another member of the band," Tim says. In fact at one point Ken played bass in the group.Tim hopes classmates who frequented the Tiki Club or danced to the Sands of Time at school functions will get together and revisit the music of that time."It's all about memories," he says. You can get tickets for the reunion show at Sam the Record Man, Jack Fraser, Keynote Studios, the Alzheimer Society of Belleville Hastings, Bay View Mall, Harmony Music Plus and in Trenton at Riverside Music and Electronics.
