Artist description
Our two EP's, "vaudville in virginia" and "star's fixed life like ours," seem like they were spawned centuries ago and are hardly recognizable next to our new music, which is a more honest, abrasive, feedback-laden approach. We've decided to let the songs speak for themselves, rather than creating an identity for them and trying to make them fit. If our music was a coffee table, you could say we stripped its veneer and placed it in the middle of the living room to see how you would react to its nicks and grooves, its essence, what it's really made of. We're giving you everything and not worrying about what is unsavory |

Press Reviews
Swirling and jangly guitars are built and textured to create a unique sound for this South Jersey trio. Incorporating Velvet Undergound-inspired licks with a tinge of classic rock and a more current indie flavor, their sound has a British leaning, but never really fits into any specific category on this six song recording. Listening to this, I have to keep reminding myself that this band is from South Jersey, an area usually empty of decent original music. Bringing to mind the earlier spunk of North Jersey indie-pop group Spent, this is a band that could easily fit in with the whole North Carolina Merge Records scene. Still, Grand Fabric is a little more inclined to experiment than most of those bands, showing the Radiohead influence that sneaks in more in their approach to the music than in the sound. I can’t say I am completely drooling over this band after listening to the songs here, but they are definitely a band to look out for and catch at a live show in Philadelphia as they continue to develop and fine-tune their sound. -Matthew Ralph 03.23.01 www.tangzine.com
Grandfabric has tilted the pop song formula just enough to create a sound that is as unique as it is accessible. The New Jersey band carries the torch of the loud (i.e. post-Sinatra) Hudson beat sound of Yo La Tengo and The Feelies, but has marked its own territory with quirky chord changes that bring to mind early Talking Heads. Having recently souped up their sound and expanded to a four-piece, their show at the Pontiac will be the first with new guitarist, Craig Pacelli. He joins frontman Andrew Toy, bassist Brian Wilkinson and drummer Peter Girgenti in what was already a clever, tightly wound ensemble. The rhythms are complex and the hooks never come when one might expect. They approach the raw, basic elements of rock from an art-house perspective, transforming both traditions in the process.
