It was one of those Saturday nights that die-hard Hickey Tavern patrons hold in the highest regard.
Those who sought shallow chit-chat and florescent drinks with pretty umbrellas would not find conditions at The Hickey very hospitable.
But party animals who craved the back-beating rhythm of The Hogs knew that they had come to the right watering hole.
"It's a good thing that somebody knew how to change a fan belt, or we wouldn't' have made it," said front man Terry Jones. "It's great to be here. The crowd is enthusiastic, and we get a lot of respect."
The roving black van that carries The Holy Ordained Gospel Singers (HOGS) from show to show has been to the area a dozen times. At the Hickey Tavern, The Hogs have found a loyal following among Bonaventure students.
"Theses guys know how to handle a crowd. They don't play anything too serious, but it's good rock 'n roll. They're a good time band," said junior Keith Demers.
The three-piece band has been traveling an easy-rider journey throughout New York State for 15 years, gigging smoky taverns and doing their own thing. What keeps the HOGS rolling?
"We like to think of ourselves as a New York State band, but we do travel to Jamaica quite frequently. We take a lot down when we go there," said bassist Joe Bonavita.
Other than baking in the sun, vacations to the Caribbean help add a reggae spice to their 60s, 70s, and rhythm and blues style originals, Jones said.
The Hogs have a tight sound that grooves well for a rowdy, foot stomping audience.
"They play play a different kind of rock. They're exhilarating.
"You can get into them," said 1991 alumna Bridgett Burchell.
The Geneseo-based band laces their set with songs from The Doors, Jesus Christ Superstar, Talking Heads, Santana, Moody Blues and their Hickey trademark, The Kingmen's "Louie Louie."
"Make yourself some dancing room, and we''' get to your request. We'll play just about any cover, but we will put a big twist to it," Jones said.
This strange "twist" could make old Carly Simon sound psychedelic. Not that any patron would dare them to try it, but the seasoned road veterans have attracted some teeth chattering requests over the years.
"This really old fella wanted to hear some Elvis. We came out with "Little Sister," and he was dancing like a maniac," Jones explained. "He was shaking his head so hard that he shook his dentures right out of his mouth. They landed right onto Joey's keyboards."
The Hogs will return to the Hickey Tavern Halloween night. What a concept.
