Artist History History: KATAFALK was founded in 1995, with Chris (guitars) as only remaining founding member. Wokkel joined the band somewhere in 1996 as vocalist. By the end of '97 a first demo was recorded. The tape is not available anymore, but it did contain the classic 'Rise Now'. That song is still being played live, though a lot faster these days. The demo showed a melodic thrash metal band, with deathmetal influences already coming to the surface, but keeping it mostly mid-tempo. Almost right after the recordings the drummer quit, which snowballed into a series of line-up changes. Because of his departure only a few shows could be played to support the release of the tape, which has been called ‘cult’ by some already. A couple of live shows were done in '98 with the drummer and guitarist of SEIZURE and on bass Dick (WINTER OF SIN, ex-CANTARA). These gigs showed a major improved KATAFALK: Expanded into a tight playing band and leaving the first demo far behind. Afterwards Dick switched to guitar and new permanent members were found in the rhythmic section of CRYONIC STATE: Martin (drums) and Jurjen (bass). Blasting live again (a.o. with CENTURIAN) it was clear this was a perfect team. Consequently, the musical style has also changed: Current style is dominated by brutal blastbeats and aggressive riffing. These components are brought together in very dynamic, well structured songs. They keep the listeners focused, and incite a lot of energy. In 2000 the band played some succesful shows, one of which was in Groningen’s music temple Vera. This gig ended up very high in the venue’s annual poll, indicating KATAFALK’s growing status in the local scene. Over the years the band has become one of the leading bands of Groningen’s rich metal scene. At the end of 2000 Dick decided to quit due to lack of time and was replaced by Pier Abe on guitars. With him in the ranks, KATAFALK hit the studio in March 2001 to record a promo-cd which features the band’s latest material. Raging on at full strength, KATAFALK is ready for the future. Eager as ever to supply the world with Fast and Brutal Metal!
