This is a terrific little slice of tense and menacing groove. The artist, Joses Vart, has crafted a noire-ish urban thriller backdrop. From the minor arpeggios to the cat’s paw creeping of the drum and bass lines to the tense dread of the person chattering on the phone this whole track speaks to a fast approaching and uninvited deadline. There is almost a conversational feel here. Dense little vignettes interact with groovy hip-hop beats and hint at trouble. The threat hinted at in the track never becomes overwhelming. The listener is never consumed and drawn into the melodrama. The artist has been careful to allow distance and in so doing allows the listener to merely observe the unfolding. My favourite part of this track is, for lack of a better term, the bridge. At about 2:00 a very frantic screeching voice begins fading in, approaching with its message of terror. The rhythm has fallen away. A small motif holds the background together as the banshee wail approaches. Just as the howling is in the front of the mix the drum and bass kick back on and a synth patch, the timbre of which is very similar to the shrieking voice, takes over and shreds a sympathetic wail. Very cool! This is a very well done piece. Nothing is overstated. The artist builds a small cast of sounds and allows them each to work to maximum effect. I look forward to listening to this track again and to whatever else Joses Vart has to offer.
