    Press Reviews
Stonewall Society (September 2001)... The cover of "One For The Boys" states Easy Listening. I agree in that the CD is indeed a very easy listening experience. Styner's style is very lush, full orchestration. In other words as the CD states unabashedly romantic. Classic in general, "One For The Boys" could easily be the soundtrack for a today's version of "Where The Boys Are" well, "Where The Gay Boys Are" anyway. Refreshing and unique, you don't really expect gay lyrics when you hear the intro's. There is the twist which makes this music Styner's very own. A bold and stylized approach which bring to mind scenes from movies like "Beautiful Thing". Big bands and their singers, its seems to me have had a large influence on Jerry Styner. His vocal talent is well suited for the treatment and enhances an already pleasurable listen. Names like, Harry Connick Jr., Mel Torme, and just a little Mike Douglas, come to mind if I were requested to make associations. Styner has his own unique ability to deliver these melodies in a more than comforting manner. Classics have always been of obvious benefit, and Jerry Styner very definitely is very classic. There are eleven songs on the "One For The Boys" CD. All worth individual mention for varying reasons. The music is produced, arranged, and performed by Jerry Styner so all the originality shines through. The Title track, "One For The Boys" is a richly produced lingering melody. "Shadows" is an upbeat venture with just a backbeat of Caribbean feel. "Living With Love In My Life" is an introspective look at the forming of relationships and the wonder thereafter. The final cut, "These Are The Good Times" is hopeful and shares the message of involvement, caring and initiative. Of course, Jerry Styner says it much more eloquently. According to Jerry Styner's website, the songs on "One For The Boys" are from experiences of his life. This is evidenced in his articulacy in bringing the romance and familiar feel to his melodies. The broad sweeping orchestration adds the classic or better yet big band/Hollywood feel. Not taking away from Styner's statements, the accompaniment adds even more flare and pizzazz to already enchanting songs.
