Artist description
When Debbie Deane was 6 years old, her favorite record was Carole King’s Tapestry. She grew up listening to Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Steely Dan while playing Bach, Chopin and Debussy on the piano.Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, she found herself driven to explore the fertile ground of music and lyrics. Her older brother introduced her to rock, folk, and funk. She listened to all the great divas in the folk, pop and jazz worlds. Music was the ultimate refuge. At age 12, she handed in lyrics rather than a poem for her first poetry assignment.Debbie went on to study English Literature at Harvard University and Jazz studies at the Berklee College of Music. Her life changed when she took her first songwriting class. Now here we are introducing her first self-titled CD.Piano-based jazz/folk.She has been endorsed by the talent of many great musicians who have joined her on the record and who perform with her live. The great bassist Jeff Andrews (Michael Brecker, Vital Information) produced 6 tracks on the record. Those songs feature the rhythm section of Jeff Andrews-bass, Brian Blade (Joni Mitchell, Seal)-drums and Debbie Deane-piano. The great young tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman plays beautifully on 2 tracks. Wayne Krantz (Steely Dan) graces the record with acoustic guitar. Phil Markowitz plays some Hammond B-3 and some great keyboard parts. The other half features Debbie with the team of Richard Hammond on the bass and Rodney Holmes (Santana) on drums. Debbie Deane accompanies herself solo on 2 songs. Debbie’s songs explore love, ambivalence and freedom. Her original music possesses a yearning quality combined with a unique vocal style that is both soulful and heartfelt. During the past year, She have been performing regularly throughout New York City in various venues including Baby Jupiter and The Bitter End. She has had the opportunity to collaborate with some of the city’s finest musicians and has created a loyal following. Her writing credits include the ballad “Don’t Turn Your Head Away” recorded on Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Atlantic Records release “Let’s Go Bang.” |

Press Reviews
Review from Jazzreview.comWhen you first hear the soulful voice of singer/songwriter Debbie Deane you might think of other another soul chanteuse or two. Brooklyn born Deane credits Aretha Franklin for her piano influence but its not a far cry to hear some of Franklin's emotive vocal signature within her own delivery. Joined on her debut CD by an amazingly varied array of New York's current crop of top sidemen, including Josh Redman, Wayne Krantz, Jeff Andrews and Brian Blade, Deane delves into personal experience and various aspects and points of love, loss and beyond. So is it sophisticated pop or the have-groove-will-travel brand of jazz? In reality, its both and both done well. Deane has a languid, yet crisp and emotive delivery, soul to burn and has just deservedly scored a European licensing deal with a tour to follow next year. |
