The Epic of Yerffej |

Press Reviews
This is rough theatre. The audience enters a stage filled with all genre of drums. Their beat drives this tribal "percussion opera". The story begins with Yerffej, a warrior -- a gloriously seething animus who is virtually unstoppable. At death he meets The Administrator, a trim, elegant figure who offers Yerffej a choice -- regular reincarnation or Program B, an option for special souls which includes unique training. Yerffej chooses B, and we enter into a succession of his lives, along with coaching sessions by The Creator. The theology is delivered with humor, punch and surprising complexity. An ensemble of 16 performs the drumming, singing, acting and movement. Not all are equally skilled, giving the show a guileless quality which both limits its power and lends it charm. That said, the three principals are quite strong and the story is compelling. This epic is intriguing as an early workshop performance of an ambitious work by offbeat tribal visionaries.-Beth Amsbury |
