Press Reviews
Cable subscribers may recognize her from "It Was Him or Us," a cheesy movie-of-the-week rerunning constantly on Lifetime. Monique Lanier's acting career - among other things - sidetracked her music for years, which makes this mindblower of a solo debut all the more welcome. The Tori Amos connection (eerie piano tinklings, dramatic vocal phrasings from whisper to howl) has faded by the time the ballsy "Victory Garden," a Megan Peters tune, kicks in. Her angelic voice and knack for hooks make the dark ride easier, which lightens up in the homestretch with "Fortune Teller," a gorgeous ballad that would burn up the radio in a just world. Then it's back into the black with "Mountains," ending on a sanguine note with "Your Mouth." A beautiful album worth more cries than a hundred Lifetime flicks. - Salt Lake City Weekly, March 2001 |
