Artist History
Andrew Bartley resides in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was born in England but shortly thereafter moved to Canada with his parents and sister. Being the only musician in the family, his early influences were high school buddies that played in local Rock bands. “Music was always an escape for me. A place for me to go and hang out.” He states. Long hours were spent on the edge of his bed practicing. It wasn’t until years later that he was lead to share what had developed into a love of the acoustic guitar. He has been primarily a self taught student of the guitar for twenty years. His influences now are varied -“Anyone with a guitar in their hands usually catches my attention.” he says “I’m attracted to music that moves me inside regardless of the label people like to put on it. If it’s from the heart I get turned on to it.” “I do like to listen to allot of guitar music, from Leo Kottke to Martin Sexton, from Mississippi John Hurt to Michael Hedges. I just love the sound of an acoustic guitar. It is the perfect instrument.” “Ultimately, I try to interpret my thoughts, experiences or spirit into sound. Yet without words to over-define anything. That way the listener is challenged to be more open.” Throughout the last two years he has played locally in coffee shops, social events, benefit concerts and for the Salvation Army. Andrew has moved his need to share his gift into an enjoyable audience/artist relationship. Another direction that has arisen has been session work for other people. “I was approached after a benefit gig by a video producer to write a bed (back ground) track for his latest work. A very exciting proposition which worked out great.” Andrew applies his mature professional attitude, learned from his 16 year career as graphic artist, to each musical endeavor. Lately he has been a substitute DJ on AM 1140’s Gospel Hour. “Doing that is allot fun!” Andrew’s debut CD “Eight Months” was released in October 2000. The release lead to airtime on CBC, AM 1140 and CKUA radio. In addition to a television appearance on Calgary’s primetime “A” Channel Breakfast show. Throughout the CD Andrew creates simple moods with each original composition. Capturing the textures of his experiences, we’re taken from dark ocean waves of love torn, to spirited dedications. This recording gives the listener a front row seat to the twists and turns of Andrew’s musical landscape. The variety and honesty in Eight Months keeps this recording fresh and in constant motion. As for the future? “I play regularly to support the CD, and I’m writing material for the next one. I continually try to develop as a musician, through guitar camps, courses, magazines, other musicians, and many hours on the edge of my bed.” |

His original melodies andnatural warmth make for a special experience"-Denis GradySinger/Song writer. "Andrew has a strong rhythmic sense and his tunes have an unmistakeable groove to them. Having somebody on the local scene who is as dedicated as he isto expanding the voice of the acoustic guitar as a solo instrument is a very welcome development"-Steve Fisher/Instructor/Guitarist for The Sheep River Rounders |
