Artist History
Step Back & Repulse Monkey is the name of a musicians collective formed originally by Mikhail Stepashin and Heidar Aliev in 1972 when Uzbekistan was still part of the USSR.
They met whilst postgraduate students in London at St Martins School of Art where they adopted the pseudonyms 'Pete Challis' and 'Phil Diplock'.
After the huge success of the album Big Water Fun in 1982 the band 'disappeared' amid wild rumours. It was even suggested at one point that they had been kidnapped by the mafia. The truth however was somewhat more prosaic and after they served their prison sentences for armed robbery and extortion they returned to Taoism for inspiration.
Heidar Aliev is believed to have returned to England and currently to be living somewhere in Dorset
Mikhail Stepashin revived the band in the 90's and has had some success in his homeland with "Ceci N'est Pas Un CD" (despite the lame title). He occasionally visits London.
Their current work is created using the I Ching and is stylistically disparate displaying a wide range of influences
