Artist History
Skip Frenzy, led by Matt Graven, has been making
indie music with a shoegazer flare since late 1997.
The members had actually been involved in multiple
projects over the past 5 years, but it was in '97
that Matt recruited long time friends Patrick Voit
(formerly of The Crud) and Angela to back him
on the drums and bass, respectively. Since then,
they have been recording new material and
distributing music (including a free promo)
over the Internet. Most recently, they've
been reviewed in multiple magazines
and added to the playlists at various radio
stations. |

RANT UK MUSIC REVIEW: SKIP FRENZY
Independent Demo Cassette
By Don Waller
New York has always been a hotbed of musical
development, and there are new bands popping
up literally every day with new points of view.
Skip Frenzy is a relatively new band (together
since late last year),and this three-piece has
forged a sound that is theirs alone. The
three-song demo I received from the band is
a mixture of trancey vocals and fuzzed-out
guitars that draws the line between stasis
and motion.
'Suffocate' starts off the tape and defines the
parameters of Skip Frenzy's sound. Vocalist Matt
Graven's low-key vocals are offset by corrosive
guitars and the solid backing of Angela (bass)
and Pat Voit (drums). 'Suffocate' is their
manifesto, and sets the tone for what's to come.
The sprawling 'Carry On' clocks in a six minutes
even, and displays some nice layered guitar work. While comparisons to the Velvet
Undergound may seem a bit obvious, they aren't
too far off the mark. This song unwinds slowly,
and I imagine it to be the centerpiece of
their live set. A few indie zines have pegged
this to be a potential hit, and I'm inclined to
agree.
My favorite from the tape is the closer, 'Any
Other Way'. This one's more in the vein of
British modern rock, and the band seems to hint
at what then next batch of material will sound
like. This song's got more of a conventional
structure than the other two songs, and I
could most definitely see this one getting a
lot of play on modern rock stations everywhere.
The band is getting ready to record not one but
two promo EPs, and I hope they remember to keep
me on their mailing list. The only thing that
Skip Frenzy lacks is a little big-budget
production. Give them that, and they may give
the rest of the alternative rock world
a run for their money. It will be interesting
to watch this band's progress. I look forward to
their EP releases.
