Artist History
Between 1998 and 2001 Q was one of the premier Los Angeles based bands, playing at venues such as Luna Park, The Roxy, Lush and The Gig. They gained much internet based notoriety primarily through mp3.com in it's heyday when an unsigned band could actually get some real exposure here. When Q was featured in some of the LA trade mags, things really started to buzz around town, and various record labels began to take notice. In particular, Columbia Records showed the most signing potential for the band. At the height of Q's popularity, a series of shows at the 'gone but not forgotten', famed Luna Park climaxed in October 1999 when the entire A&R staff of Columbia paraded into a packed house of rocking Q fans. After the show, then manager Andrew Leff stated, "It's done, they're going to sign you." Unfortunately, those words were to prove untrue. A follow-up show to finalize the deal was set up to provide a glimpse of the band to Columbia exec Tim Divine. The night of the show, Luna Park cancelled all bands to hold a private party instead. Q was made aware of this only hours before the show. A quick make-up gig was thrown together, to be staged five days later on a Sunday evening. Most of the usual crowd that showed up for the cancelled show did not come out for the make up-gig. That Sunday night, playing to a near empty room, Q showcased miserably for Tim Divine. Although he said he heard some songs that he liked, he wasn't convinced to sign. The next year Q went through some personnel changes, replacing bassist Allister Annear and drummer Christopher Allis with Slobo Svrdlan and Trevor Thornton. The new members made an astounding difference in the live show, as both guys were veteran mega-players from bands such as Gene Loves Jezebel and Asia. Although the chemistry was at it's peak for the new line-up, various aspects of the band's business were falling short. In 2000, Q went through three management companies, each worse than the one before. Also, an internet based entertainment company had lured the boys into dropping all other Q websites (including mp3.com), and focusing only on theirs. Nothing came of it, except a complete loss of momentum for the band. Meanwhile on the creative front, Q was still gaining fans, and one of them was a producer named Kipper. Kipper had produced the Grammy award winning "Brand New Day" with Sting and was out touring the record. He agreed to meet with Q about producing the band in January 2001 while he was in Los Angeles taping the Jay Leno show. Unfortunately, the band was becoming buried by a feeling that their day had come and gone. The feeling was especially apparent with Trey and Paul, who were sensing that Q was headed down rather than up. It was about then that Paul had another opportunity come his way, one with a potential record deal attached. In January 2001 he called the rest of the band to say that he was moving on, and his reasoning was accepted in friendship by the other members. The meeting with Kipper was cancelled, as the band did not want to move forward without Paul. Other Q members parted ways, although Trey and Slobo work together from time to time. Since the band broke up, many fans have emailed wanting to know if any music is still available to purchase. CDs are now becoming available again, so keep an eye here. Tell any of your friends that were Q fans, because the CDs will only be available for a short time and will include songs that were never before released. Q still owes some money to Andrew Leff, who handled some expenses out if his own pocket, and this is how he is going to be re-paid. Once the debt is cleared, the CDs will be removed from the site. For all of you Q fans who came to the shows and supported the band, THANKS, YOU MADE IT ALL WORTH THE EFFORT! |
