Profolyxby Marcin M ManekWhen it comes to electronic ambient, there are several approaches an artist can undertake. You can sculpt your music - the end result is a smooth trip that is precisely calculated to take you into new realms. Or you can just throw sounds out and see what sounds good - when it starts going wrong, you end the song or throw it out. That approach gives you the chaos theory of music; and in chaos, there is beauty. With Profolyx, you never know which one it's going to be. With the wide amalgam of styles that he adopts (ambient, drum 'n bass, new age-ish (okay, okay, it's only one song), and insanity) and wields, every composition is an experiment in musical architecture.Just to give a few examples, Kraft'd is a disturbing ambient piece with suspicious burblings and evil, seductive whispers - it almost glides on subdued malevolence. Singularity throbs with powerful synths, recurring pulsating drums and non-pervasive drum 'n bass. Input/Output is a pleasant, slightly drum 'n bass (without the bass) ambient piece overlayed on smooth synths. Finally, Empty is a light and almost fluffy new-agey track which pleases the ear mainly due to its smooth flow. The only problem with some of the more chaotic pieces is that while Profolyx can start them, and carry them, he has problems finding a suitable ending. While this happens rarely, it sometimes means that there is an excessive amount of repetition close to the end of a song. Don't get discouraged - it's just chaos. Who rocks the party rocks the body?Well I've gotta say that Profolyx is definately one of the best musicians I've heard. If you ever wanted music to listen to around midnight that will scare the shit out of you, this is where it's at. The reason most of his songs are scary is because they dig deep down to the most basic level of fear, and milk it for all it's got. Which is also the reason that some of his other songs can bring back memories of good times or send the listener into flaming depression. In either case, it's definately aural opiate worth trying.Profolyx is located here on audiogalaxy.comAnd here on mp3.comMy personal experience with Profolyx? Well I'm glad you asked. Even if you didn't, unless you stop reading here you're gonna hear it. The way I found Profolyx was on audiogalaxy when I was getting a closer look at Precenphix. I noticed some of the people listed as 'similar artists' were in the experimental music category. So I decided to see if there was anything good in that genre. Lo and behold on the second page of listings there was a musician whose music was described as 'dark and brooding' so I clicked. The first song I heard was Hack Your Mind and it pretty much scared me shitless. Being in a dark room listening to that song...definately an experience. But at that time I was hooked on preek so I never really found the time to download anything else. Up until a few weeks ago when I reformatted my hard drive and actually got a decent connection. I went back around to all the people I never had a chance to really listen to and found that Hack Your Mind had been put out of commission. Naturally I was pissed and so left a comment (along with a few stranger ones) about how I wanted the older songs.Being the nice guy he is, Profolyx left a comment about where I could go to find the songs I wanted and now I have them all.--insert evil maniacal laughter here--So all in all, he's an insanely nice guy and you should go download all his music and buy as many cds as you can afford and force your family and friends to buy them as well. Actually no...you could do that but it's probably better if you don't go all psycho-fan because then he might just turn into an ego maniac, which could only lead to a deal with MTV's Carson Daly to be the sixth backstreet boy and wear pink camo pants and tanktops which say 'i feel pretty' and do 80's choreographed dance moves in front of thousands of screaming viewers on stage in times square. And we can't have that now can we?Who are those people who say I'm strange?-jenelle* Kostelec
