Artist description
Coming from the San Francisco Bay Area, with its wide range of cultures and lifestyles, MOLASSES delivers music to a demanding audience with diverse tastes and backgrounds. That diversity is reflected in their music. Though most of their material falls in the Pop/Rock vein, they like to mix it up a bit for their live shows, adding some Latin, soul and funk flavors to their homegrown recipes, and giving the audience a wide variety of styles to appreciate. The diversity of musical styles may be seen as a hindrance as far as categorization, but the band sees it as a strength. Rich vocals (male and female) and crisp harmonies make this a dynamic, high-energy outfit with diverse skills and influences, yielding a catalogue of catchy tunes all bearing a distinctive, unifying MOLASSES flavor.March 2001 marks the release of their first album "Tasty Picks", a collection of delectable ditties that mark a real musical maturity for the band. On the release, MOLASSES seeks to fuse boundaries between genres. Through extensive collective experience, they have developed a chemistry that allows freedom of musical exploration with diverse, memorable tunes, all the while delivering fun-filled, high-energy performances. The members of MOLASSES began writing and recording together in 1998. Between weekends playing packed houses in glitzy cover bands (Divalicious, Thunderpussy), the members of MOLASSES began recording their songs at their home studio in Oakland, CA. With the addition of longtime collaborator Jeffrey Suffin (Holy Mother of Pearl) and local drummer David Fuller (Unity 5), Molasses had the band and the resources it needed to showcase their collaborative songwriting talents, and the "big show" savvy to know how to do it with style.A bit of Lenny Kravitz flavor, a bit Dave Matthews groove. The dueling (and sometimes revolving) lead vocalists collaborate on duets with catchy melodic grooves backed by the band's rich harmonies and tight grooves. Everyone in MOLASSES sings. This asset allows the group to wrap their tunes in blanket-layers of harmonies that enhance their dynamic music, from the huge driving rock sound to the softest, soulful whispers. The vibes on "Tasty Picks" vary from track to track. "Young Again" and "Pop Song" are bouncy pop tunes that groove on good feelings and catchy hooks, while "Clean" is a soulful duet between Brooks and guest female vocalist Pasha. "Just Her Winning" and "In The Shade" are catchy, mid-tempo nostalgia numbers that evoke imagery and highlight the depth in songwriting and arrangements on the album. The verses of "Come Undone" stand out as a pure-bred 80's prog-rock tribute, balanced by a driving beat and a melodic bridge and chorus. "In My Head" is a outpouring confessional duet featuring Pasha's powerful, sultry vocal style. And they continue to evolve and refine their sound through performance and collaborative songwriting. MOLASSES is here for the tasting, so please, take a bite.Contact: Brooks Lundy (510) 384-6945 |
