NASHIA GETS REVIEW IN COASTAL VIEW NEWSPAPER! Progressive rock has been around since the '70's but I'll bet there has never been a progressive rock practitioner who admits his work is pleasant. Pleasant progressive? The words form an oxymoron like military intelligence or jumbo shrimp. But Carpinteria has spawned a musical artist, who not only admits to creating pleasant progressive music, he strives for that hitherto oxymoronic status. Nashia (pronounce both As 'ah' and the I 'eye') Wachsman is a Carpinteria guitarist who has recently released his first CD entitled "Melodic Thought." And following a growing trend, he used his home studio in Carpinteria for all the recording. But unlike any trends I know of, at least since McCartney took the bull by the horns, Nashia wrote all the music on 'Melodic Thought' plays all the instruments and then he recorded it, which probably goes Paul McCartney one better. First of all the music is really good. It's the kind of stuff you can listen to seriously and get something from, but you can also put it on as background music and it won't interrupt your thought processes. Part of the reason for that is that it's all instrumental, no words to wind around your brain. Nashia creates some unique melodic ideas. In "Inspiration Blues," the second cut, for instance, one of the several guitar tracks does this chording thing like Wes Montgomery. But it starts out with the tape going backward like in the Beatles Revolution Number 9. He describes the music as "really mellow, acoustic kind of rock. Kind of New Agey, but kind of contemporary but with all natural instrumentation." He's using acoustic guitars and for the most part a genuinely acoustic sound. Each cut is like he's caught the creative process of a jam session and has sort of given it a beginning and end within popular music limits, three or four minutes. When I say 'sort of' I mean it. Sometimes I wanted the tunes to keep developing the ideas. Other times I wanted to write lyrics to a particular tune. Now you probably know Nashia if you follow local music at all. He plays guitar in Lefty and the Aces with Marty Rosales on vocals and drums. So the circle Nashia runs in includes Dave Dalhquist on keyboards, and Gail Fenton, the bassist who recently tied the knot with Marty at the Wetlands Park. Nashia was best man, by the way. "We just finished a short CD with Lefty and the Aces so I'm going to have a double CD release party," Nashia said. Because it is extremely difficult for a solo performer to play more than one instrument at one time, Duster Bennett aside, he is teaching his friends some of the stuff from the new CD so it can be performed at the release party. It's lush. It's rich. It's recommended. Go out and buy it! Go to Buster's and say, "I want Melodic Thought by Nashia Wachsman." Or you can go to his web site nashia.com and purchase the CD from there. Nashia's CD release party will be Sunday, May 20 at SoHo Restaurant and Music Club on State Street, in Santa Barbara at, 8 pm. Lefty and the Aces will be there as well trotting out their short five cut CD. The rub at the door is $5.
