Artist description
Pitched somewhere amongst the plaintive simplicity of Nick Drake, the eclectic Americana of Bill Frisell, the southern rock of the Allman Brothers and the obscure searching of piano virtuoso Ran Blake resides Gar Ragland's own musical basecamp.A native North Carolinian, Ragland sharpened his musical teeth in the early 90's playing coffee shops, bars and clubs in the budding Charlottesville, VA music scene. His passion for music then led him to the northeast to study composition and improvisation at the New England Conservatory in Boston, where he currently resides.Gar's music has been described as "Appalachia meets avante, with seasonings of jazz and New Orleans. His solo performances strip the music to its basest elements, delivering its message both unadorned and with emotion."When he is not performing as a solo act, or developing his own material, he is the bassist and singer in the experimental pop band Trikona. In addition, he is the founder of Riparius Records, where he works with other artists as a producer and studio engineer.Ragland has a wealth of touring experience, sharing bills with a diverse range of artists such as the Dave Matthews Band, delta blues giant Corey Harris and pianist Ran Blake. He has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, the main space of New York's Knitting Factory, New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall and countless roadside watering holes throughout the South. He finds inspiration in a myriad of people and things, many of which call home in mountains or museums. |
