Artist History
Born 1915. Saw Bessie Smith in Alabama tent shows in the 1920s, moved to Chicago and met Nat Cole at Wendell Phillips High School in 1929 and sang with him in kid bands. Joined the Rhythm Rascals and played the 1933 Chicago World's Fair & the Cotton Club, opening for Cab Calloway. Returned to Chicago and joined the Four Blazes in 1941 and had hits with "Ragged Ride" and "Mary Joe". When the group broke up ran a tavern on Chicago's west side. Came back to prominence in 1986 replacing Ollie Crawford in Willie Dixon's Big Three. Headlined the 1995 Chicago Blues Festival and died later that year, age 80. |
