Artist description
Aphasia n: Partial or total loss of the ability to articulate ideas or comprehend spoken or written language, resulting from damage to the brain caused by injury or disease.
Brett Carruthers (vcls), Jamie Jones (gtr), Kevin Oliver (bass), James Toth (gtr) and Jim Davis (drums)
Aphasia draws from a number of musical styles and artistic influences, combining industrial and electronic music with grunge, goth, and progressive rock, bound together by Carruthers evocative lyrics on loss, fate, desire, sexual needs and man’s disposition to consume and destroy.
“[Aphasia’s] coarsely textured guitars…resonated with the caustic, emotional lyrics of vocalist Brett Carruthers who completely oozed 'rock star', …with a barrel full of sexual innuendo and lewd gesturing. Certainly a band that is comfortable with themselves and their music, and definitely performance personalities!”
-Casus B on www.dark-entires.com on the Reverb Horror Show. .
In 2000 Aphasia evolved into a full band when Carruthers, Campbell and Oliver met Davis and Toth while attending Fanshawe College’s, Music Art’s Industry Program in London Ontario. Within the year they recorded their EP, The Endless Reverie and opened for Robin Black and the Intergalactic Rockstars at London’s Call The Office.
Stymied by London’s erratic music scene, Aphasia joins Jay Gordon’s, D1 Music Network’s Battle of the Bands competition winning round one (and currently leading round two), they also join MP3.com and begin building a fan base. Positive reactions give aphasia the motivation and opportunity to begin seeping their way into the Toronto scene. In 2003 Aphasia played the Fetish Cares AIDS benefit at the Big Bop (with Super Halo and The Birthday Massacre), became residents of Toronto and replaced Campbell with guitarist Jamie Jones (formerly of Merkury Burn).
Currently Aphasia is recording their much anticipated full length album due out for October 2003.
