Artist History
Artist historyAnchor started in 1995. First there were only Saku Korosuo (guitar, vocals) and Jani Aalto (drums) but soon the band became a trio with Jarkko Laine on bass. The first recordings were made on February 1996 with the recording equipment of current Riff (Lauri Paloposki, Tommi Posa). In 1996 Anchor pulled off their first gig ever in Rockspot. The short and concise three-song-gig didn’t leave anyone cold… The following years Anchor was always welcome to perform at this festival. During the following year it was the time for the debyt EP. Six songs ended up on the CD and of those Tax-Free is still being played on live performances. The EP was recorded and mixed at RW Studios and mastered at Finnvox. There were both CD and cassette editions, but the latter were thrown into the trashcan right away because the quality sucked ass. The prints for the CD were in progress for two months due to the ambitious artistic requirements… Anchor-family got a new member in the summer of 1998 when Osku Louhelainen took control over the keyboards. Osku had been listening to the band a couple of months earlier at the Puistorock and got interested. The music has matured faster and more rhythmical; therefore the keyboard seemed to fit into the picture. It all turned out to work pretty good in the practise as well as on the stage, so it was time for the new EP. The experience with the previous recording suggested that sessions might take quite a long time. So this time the studio was booked for many weeks. Now on the EP there was 7 tracks, of which Cosmic Rage and Strange Afternoon were composed during the recording sessions. The doom-metal -stage was history; now it was time for the Pantera-Korn-Metallica -influence. The EP was recorded and mixed at RW Studios and mastered at Z-Trading. It had a warm welcome on both metal and mainstream music scenes. The year 1999 was the time of change for Anchor. The EP was finished on the spring and the plan was to start marketing the band more seriously. However, part of the members had some motivational problems and in the summer of 1999 it was decided to freeze all the action till the band could find players willing to put effort for the group. Meanwhile Saku and Jani started to write more aggressive material. Soon they found a bass player, a true metalhead Miika Rynkänen from Järvenpää who used to play in different groups during nearly the whole 1990’s. Anchor started right away busy training with live performances. New songs came along and the new sound is set for furious attitudemetal... |

Press Reviews
"Anchor could perhaps be described as the Finnish answer to Machine Head although they don´t really have the same powerful flow as their American cousins. Heavy they are still but they are a little more melodic and emotional than Machine Head as most Scandinavian bands. This is in my opinion a good thing and in several aspects they are actually even better. Beautiful melodies go hand in hand with crushing killer riffs on this mini album and Anchor definitely have the potential to conquer at least part of the world. One thing that needs to be improved is the vocals that sometimes are a little too rough for the music. It´s really just on "Pain Inside" that the vocals sound great and this is also the best track on the album altough the semi-ballad "Broken Day" is not far behind. The vocals are definitely not a disaster though and altogether Anchor has produced a nice piece of music. Perhaps they sometimes sound a little too similar to Machine Head but most of the album contains pure rocking Anchor tunes. If you enjoy speed and power together with the heavy Machine Head groove then this band from the country of a thousand lakes might be worth checking out. The production is very good and the album was recorded at RW Studios, mastered at Finnvox by Mika Jussila. Cellos on "Broken Day" were done by Jarkko Laine." Vincent, Tartarean Desire |
