Artist description
Originally hailing from Colorado, Martyrs & Poets - comprised of Nate Picard on lead vocals and guitar, Jason Koiter on drums, Bryan Jensen on bass, and Dave Muckenthaler on keyboards - present a refreshing return to honest and meaningful modern Rock & Roll. Having already conquered their home state with wide airplay on local stations, music featured in a regional Pepsi commercial, and opening gigs for the likes of 3 Doors Down and Adema, the band has set their sights on the big time, recently relocating to Los Angeles. Though young (the oldest member is 22), the band shares an extremely tight bond, an obsessive devotion to their art, and a common drive for success. Their songs are intensely poetic and personal, but the music is immediately accessible and universal. Songwriter Nate finds "the best lyricists can write about an emotional experience for themselves, but relate it to everybody." He is more than happy writing hooky songs and popular music as long as he can stay true to himself. "People will know if you're being insincere," he feels. "What keeps you around is your integrity." Each member brings a different musical influence to the band, keeping their ever-growing catalog of over 100 songs diverse, but unmistakable to their sound. "When someone wants to feel good about something, they can put us in. If they're sad and want to hear a sad song, we've got those too, we try to cover all the bases," Jason notes, adding with a smile: "We're one-stop emo rock." Although their roots are acoustic, the band has progressively fleshed out their sound with complex instrumentation, pushing them toward the echelon of bands they respect and resemble, such as Bush, Creed, Nirvana, Live, and Fuel. "We like to keep people guessing," says Dave, who provides the unique addition of lush keyboards. Bryan, who started out as their road tech, prefers to shake things up live. "We concentrate on making each show an individual experience," he states, "changing up songs and even adding covers in the middle of our own tunes." Recently signing a management contract with Dark City Music and completing a demo mixed by Joe Bishara (Guns 'N Roses, Billy Idol), Martyrs & Poets are set to explode. Nate is clear about the band's goals: "I want to change the world. I want people to think twice about what they think about on a daily basis. I hope we can do that. |
