Artist History
Spikebottsford rose out of the ashes of WAMI Award winning Orange Ruffy, to go in a more aggressive direction, and the results have proven to be a blessing. No gimmicks, no fads, no rock star posing. Three working class guys without pretentions, their only direction is rock n roll fun. If you have not experienced Spikebottsford, you must. If you have, you know who they are, and you have probably had a drink with them at the bar. They are the band with the most catchy, power-driven songs and the best crowd interaction in the area. Not punk, not pop, not metal, but with all of these influences in the mix, the boys give their all at every show, no excuses, no apologies, just flat out rock, take it or leave it. The catalyst, the electrical force and melodic nature comes from Mat Nelson, guitarist and vocalist. A Les Paul and a Marshall is all he needs to work his magic. The atomic energy is provided by Jarod Kimber on the drums, holding the power in check until the final release, where no holds are barred. Bassman John Uecker prowls the stage like a demented king, laying down some of the smoothest and tightest bass lines, while providing backup vocals. This is the most inspired power pop to have been seen in the Brew City thus far, with power being the key. The power is returned from the crowd, forming a massive rock 'n' roll thunderstorm just waiting to sweep you away. This past year's Summerfest show was no exception, Spikebottsford caught the crowd early in the show hypnotizing them till the end, leaving the crowd on their feet screaming for more. They have proven a force to be reckoned with, their CD "No Motivation" has spread far and wide, getting airplay in England, as well as points far and wide across the U.S. The CD was recorded in the same fashion as their live shows are approached: "It's time to play, get out of the way!" Engineered by Matt Scerpella at Warehouse Studios, mixed by the “master” Mike Zirkel at Smart Studios and mastered at Collosal Mastering, it was finished in a week. Look for another sometime this year. With recording to start summer 2001 From the dusky industrial town of Cudahy comes a band of three, ready to take on the world, and able to do so. Just ask their fans. The bad boys from Cudahy are ready for you. Are you ready for them? |

Press Reviews
John Uecker (no relation to Bob), bassist for punk trio Spikebottsford and the tattooed guy on a lawn chair who's wearing a black T-shirt that reads "Chicks Hate Me," takes another swig of beer and explains his band's philosophy. Hear it Here Spikebottsford --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Listen up: To hear Spikebottsford's song, "Got The Shaft," click here "Together we stand," says Uecker. "Divided we fail, big time."His band mates - singer/guitarist Mat Nelson and drummer Jarod Kimber - nod in unison.Unity - with each other and with their fans - is what's powering Spikebottsford's growing buzz around town as the new band to watch. OK, the not-so-new band to watch."The band is a year old," says Nelson. "But it's really seven years old."All three members were part of local pop favorite Orange Ruffy back in the mid-'90s when the guys were just out of high school. The quintet played Summerfest in 1996 and again in 1997, also winning a WAMI that year, but then busted up over growing musical differences. After not playing at all for two years, Uecker and Nelson started jamming one day and realized they were onto something. They hauled Kimber back into the band late last year and have been cranking ever since, packing shows around town and reportedly in the running for a coveted Summerfest slot."I couldn't play in a different band, without these guys," says Kimber, who had never kept a beat before Nelson, a high school buddy, talked him into joining Orange Ruffy.Soon after reforming with a shared musical vision and philosophy - "The day this stops being fun," explained Nelson, "we stop doing this" - the trio recorded a six-song EP, "No Motivation," which they'll release Saturday."No Motivation" is ferocious fun, a sort of Blink-182-by-way-of-Cudahy salute to beer, chicks and the trouble you get when you mix the two.Citing influences from Jerry Lee Lewis to Thin Lizzy, main songwriter Nelson and his cohorts cook up instantly catchy mini-masterpieces of three chords, upbeat bass lines and sing-along choruses."We're not straight punk because we like a lot of melody - with a lot of punk bands, every song starts out DA-DA-DA-DA-DA-DA-DA!" says Nelson. "Our music is pop, with a punk edge.""No, plain pop is for the 'N Sync people," Kimber interrupts. "We're power pop, like Cheap Trick.""Here's what we are," adds Uecker. "We're a four-on-the-floor rock 'n' roll show. We're like a fast, bad-ass car. When we plug in, we're serious."Well, they're serious about their music - but not much else.Asked to give people a reason to turn up at the CD release party, Uecker shrugs."We get a lot of hot chicks at our shows," he offers. The more politically correct Nelson elbows his band mate."I think we're awesome," says Nelson. "But I also think we're fun as hell." |
