Artist description
Shelly Rastin, a songwriting and recording partner of music icon Randy Bachman (guitarist and founding member, The Guess Who & Bachman Turner Overdrive), is exploding on the Pop/Country market with a solid CD strongly showcasing her fresh, energetic vocals and clever songwriting.
Rastin was recently awarded COUNTRY ARTIST OF THE YEAR at London Ontario’s first annual 2002 Music Awards. This independent artist was up against and won over some stiff competition including country star Beverly Mahood of Lace.
This talented, blue-eyed, blonde-haired beauty was labeled "the next Shania Twain" by Nashville’s music row, after she made the trek there in 1999 to record her first demo CD, Am I Dreaming, produced by Mel Shaw, a Canadian music legend and winner of the first Juno Lifetime Achievement Award.
"She’s got the right attitude to make it. She also has the ability, the personality and the looks." - Producer Mel Shaw
In 2000, under the guidance of producer Dale Penner (Matthew Good Band, Holly McNarland, Nickelback), Shelly compiled some of her best work, a compilation of Pop/Country tunes. She has opened for many established artists, including Michelle Wright, Andy Griggs, Jamie Warren, McAuley, Kim Mitchell, Ronnie Hawkins, Sas Jordan, Jamie Warren and many more - all of whom have raved about her extraordinary talents and ambitious live show.
Everything Shelly Rastin touches turns to gold. She has captured first place and many new fans at a number of showcases and TV appearances, ranging from local talent contests, to Ed McMahon’s Next Big Star, City TV’s Breakfast Television in Toronto, Rogers Cable and London’s The New PL. Rastin recently appeared at Jeff Healey’s in downtown Toronto as a featured artist at 2002 Canadian Music Week (CMW). Shelly and her band, a talented and respected foursome, then proceeded to play the CMW Awards show post party, where The Guess Who were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
Shelly’s 1999 first single release, Am I Dreaming, hit Country radio audiences far and in between, including Moncton, Charlottetown, Winnipeg, London, Chatham, Sarnia and Port Huron, Michigan. The twinning of Rastin and Bachman produced an instant magical connection, which continued to produce new material in 2002. An initial group of 10 tunes includes, Little Fingers, as the first release in 2003. Little Fingers is now in rotation at WSAQ 107 FM, Port Huron, Michigan, and this is just a start!
"I’m glad to be aboard and doing what I can because I believe you’ll be a huge star very soon, and I’m jazzed to be working with you. There’s a great vibe all around." - Randy Bachman
Rastin’s obvious talents and well-known status have led to invitations to write and record commercial material for corporations such as London Life Insurance Company, Snow Flake Water Company of Winnipeg, and most recently, CASCAR. The big screen will also feature Shelly’s music. A new documentary, Dirty Dish, will soon include two Rastin tunes: Toys On The Playroom Floor, and, Free. Rastin’s song, Only Needs The Sky, was #1 for weeks on a London Indie chart, and ranks very well on the MP3 charts, as do other Rastin songs.
A prolific songwriter possessing an extraordinary work ethic, Shelly Rastin is one of the hardest working performers in all of Canadian music.
"I simply love to create music and perform," says Rastin. “Being able to work up a sweat on stage and give a rawkin performance for an eager audience is one of the best feelings in the world! I love to help people feel good and get in touch with their emotions. These are exciting times, and I’m gonna’ continue to give my music and my supporters everything I’ve got, and work hard to wrap them around my ‘little fingers.’” |

ROCK LEGEND ON SONGWRITING VISIT
By JAMES REANEY Free Press Arts & Entertainment Reporter
The guitar-toting big guy shielding his eyes from the sun with a rhyming dictionary looks familiar.
He should -- he's Canadian rock legend Randy Bachman. The guitar, the beard and the big, friendly voice all confirm that. Bachman has been doing his rocking by a backyard pool this week.
The Guess Who guitarist and founding member has been spending a few days in the London region, writing with Strathroy-area singer Shelly Rastin and offering her career direction.
Just now, Bachman and Rastin are looking for a word to rhyme with "destiny" -- which is one way to describe their sudden musical partnership.
"We wrote a great song, Little Fingers," Bachman says of one accomplishment of the week. But the real news may be the direction Bachman urged for the song and Rastin.
"I gave her this real cool, hip uptempo groove like a cool Sade," he says, comparing Rastin to the sultry singer of Smooth Operator.
Rastin and her manager had contacted Bachman's label when a newspaper reported he was looking for artists to record his songs. Bachman liked what he heard and a working visit was arranged. The Guess Who's living legend arrived on the weekend and has been putting in hours each day creating songs.
The writing has gone well, both say, with demos and new tunes going down day after day. For Rastin, the writing time with Bachman is a marvelous turn in the road.
She studied business at Fanshawe College and has balanced a technology job at London Life with her music.
Rastin's road so far has included recording in Nashville and a deal last year with a Toronto management outfit she didn't renew. Tomorrow, she's double-booked with an appearance at the London Convention Centre, followed by the opening slot at a Kim Mitchell show in Chatham. She's at Riptides in London on Saturday night.
The Guess Who star says Rastin and he can use off-days during the Guess Who's upcoming tour with Joe Cocker to keep working together. "The song's never done until it's on the radio," says the man who helped put such hits as Shakin' All Over, American Woman and These Eyes on the charts.
It's been a busy time for Bachman and his reunited Guess Who bandmates. On the weekend, they were presented with honorary music doctorates from Brandon University.
Tomorrow, they're to be in Toronto for ceremonies for the fourth annual Canada's Walk of Fame induction. Jean Beliveau and Leslie Nielsen are also among those being added to the growing list of Canadian stars honoured on the walk in downtown Toronto.
Later, the Guess Who will play at the Watershed benefit at Walkerton on Sept. 2.
