Artist History
Minimal Paper Heroes, the Stockholm based trio who´s
responsible for such hit songs as Popsong ´94,
Dreaming and The Fires outside. Who would have
thought they´d last a decade?
When they first started out in late 1991 the four
boys that entered the rehearsing room in southern
Stockholm had no idea what they were doing and
what the hell they wanted. The group at that point
consisted of:
Fabian Wahnquist:Vocals
Niklas Sävenby: Guitars and backing vocals
Tomas Janson: Guitars
Thomas Deurell: Bass guitar.
A drum machine completed the rhythm section.
Later on he was to be called Seifert.
Their musical influences were mainly Gothic such
as The Sisters of Mercy, The Mission and The Cure.
Despite not being ready for it, they booked a date
at Tre Backar and played their first gig February
20, 1992. This line-up lasted for about six months.
The following autumn Fabian left the band due to
studies. Niklas who had written most of the lyrics
anyway, inherited the microphone .It was a
logical but quite unnerving step for him.
So now MPH worked as a trio and played frequently
around Stockholm autumn 92 and through the summer
of 93 when a (useless and drunken) quarrel led
Deurell to leave the group.
What were the two remaining boys to do?
Two guitarists and a drum machine. They decided
they needed a bass player. Through a friend they
heard of an available one and thought they´d try
him out. Enter Johan Adelman. There was an instant
row between bassist and drummer, so a drummer
(human one) was enrolled, but soon left the
country - and the band.
Johan´s friend and former band mate Magnus Berg
was quickly installed in the drum chair.
The result was horror! What a clash! Gothic guitars
with hard rock bass lines and Heavy metal drums!
At the same time Grunge was going on and the band
was not uninfluenced by Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr,
Afghan Whigs etc. But most of all Neil Young made
a big impression on all the members and the sound
shifted towards Hard rock and Grunge.
This went on for about a year and the sound was
getting more and more aggressive when all of a
sudden Tomas decided he´d had enough. This wasn´t
at all what he wanted to do. He persuaded Niklas
that the gothic path was the path to go.
MPH was disbanded 13 December 1994.
R.I.P. (not quite)
Solicium was the new band. Niklas and Tomas
(who had switched to bass guitar now) dug out
Seifert from the closet and searched for a solo
guitar player. They found Tore Höghielm.
The sound was once again Gothic.
But this is a different story.
Meanwhile Johan and Magnus had been playing
together in Eric´s Blues Band together with
Eric Hanson, a blues guitar prodigy.
This also, is a different story.
All of the members remained on friendly terms
with each other.
In the autumn of 1999 there was talk of a reunion.
At first it started out as a Festival of
remembrance but it soon expanded to a full-blown
reunion. They started out in Solicium´s rehearsal
room.
Niklas, Tomas, Magnus and Johan.
Solicium were still active but only Niklas
(and Tore) remained.
It soon became evident that Tomas, whose other
musical project started to take off, had little
or no time for MPH and the others were forced to
let him go. Painful though it seemed. He is still
concidered a member of the band.
Today, Minimal Paper Heroes are:
Niklas Sävenby: vocals and guitars
Johan Adelman: bass guitar
Magnus Berg: drums
Minimal Paper Heroes celebrate ten years since
its birth.
On May 15 2002 MPH we played at Obscene (Basement)
to celebrate it. We played a little more than an
hour and also managed to get Fabian onstage for
two songs. We even squeezed a few encores in for
fun. These are the songs we played:
1 Remedy lane, 2 Secrets, 3 Going Down, 4 Ride
5 Stale, 6 Cold, 7 Heir, 8 Songs, books & walks
9 Popsong, 10 Fires outside (w Fabian)
11 Jag är en liten pojk (w Fabian)
and then the encores:
More than this, Bed of broken glass,
Turningpoint, Time of the year, Star.
We're sorry you were'nt there.
Det var alltsammans. Gå hem nu.
New songs coming soon. =-) |
