Artist History
The group SambaYaBamba, began it's life as a community arts project in October of '96 in Paisley, Scotland as part of a community arts thesis also called SambaYaBamba. The practice sessions in Brazilian percussion were run with 30 members of the community, the majority of whom had no previous musical experience. The twelve week course culminated in a parade through Paisley to celebrate the beginning of their local Arts Festival. Upon completion of the course a core of eight members formed a committee to look at ways of continuing as a community group. The explicit aim of the committee was to provide a means of participation in Brazilian group percussion for anyone in the community regardless of musical ability. A grant was given to the band by the Arts and Leisure Dept. of Renfrewshire Council to fund initial instrument costs and tuition. The weekly sessions continued and bookings began to be taken for performances at Gala Days and Festivals. To date the band have performed at the Glasgow West End Festival for the past three years, T in the Park '99, The Edinburgh Festival, The Isle of Jura Music Festival, and many other Gala days and festivals up and down the country. Private, commercial and just-for-fun bookings have included many of Glasgow's clubs, venues and public arenas such as Mas, King Tut's, McLellan Galleries, The Art School - even huge football stadiums and bustling shopping streets. The group also provides workshops in Brazilian percussion for special needs groups, schools for music specialists within education, and corporate teambuilding events. SambaYaBamba is even no atranger to TV having recorded a piece for the BBC (to be broadcast Spring 2001) and having been featured recently in STV's What's On Guide on S2. The group, currently numbering 42 moved home to The Glasgow School of Art, Union building in February this year (many thanks to Neil the SU president), where they practice on Monday evenings for that main group and Tuesday nights for an ongoing series of beginners Samba workshops. |
