Artist History
Rolan Bolan, 25, son of famed glam rock icon MarcBolan and American soul singer Gloria Jones, isexploding on to the music scene with a powerfulsoulful rock, described by the London Time-Outmagazine as a "hungrier Lenny Kravitz." "My life has been surrounded by tragedies, but I write from theplace that is a light in the darkness. It is so easyto take life and music too seriously. Honesty andsoul is what I want people to receive from me."The London Daily Mail, in it’s September 30, 2000feature article, calls Bolan’s voice "wonderfullymelodramatic," a quality which has allowed his dynamicand vigorous style to be enjoyed by audiences aroundthe world. In addition to forceful televisionappearances on VH1, London Today, BBC1, BBC2, andGMTV, Bolan has played to eager audiences in Paris,Madrid, London, New York, and Los Angeles. Spendingthe early months of 2001 in Europe, Bolan completed press shows and celebrations for the release of Zest Pictures'documentary entitled, "In the Daytime the Stars WillShine," of which Bolan is the star and subject.Highlights of his promotional tour for this projectinclude performances on the Dutch national televisionprogram RTL Live, as well as an interview on The KellyShow, a nationally syndicated Irish talk show. Thefilm debuted at the Rotterdam Film Festival in January 2001.He's got a unique contagious energy certain to incitesome female attention, and an unabrasive mellow vibethat men can relate to. He is a combination of spiritand show, contrary to many rock musicians who seem tofall into one category or the other.Though he was raised on California sunshine, RolanBolan sports international influences from the obviousto the obscure: T. Rex, Al Green, Love, De La Soul, and the Black Eyed Peas amongst others. He may be a celebrity child, but the loss of hisfather at age 2 and his mother’s subsequent hiatus didnot afford him any cushy privileges. The Daily Mailcalls Bolan "a shy, self-effacing Afro-American whoseems slightly bemused by all the attention." Bolanaccepts nothing for free and has worked very hard toget his career to its current stage. After obtaining a degree in the recording arts fromLoyola Marymount University, Bolan started the bandRolan Bolan and the Brothers Bounce, He receivedacclaim for his freshman effort, working withproducers The Dust Brothers, Dave Scher of BeachwoodSparks, Black Eyed Peas, and Brian Lapin,organist-producer of the upcoming Tasha Taylor releaseon Epic Records. Bolan’s back-up singers haveincluded Tasha Taylor, daughter of soul singer JohnnieTaylor, and Planet and Sierra Swann, daughters of Billy Swann."There is a demand for a new sound in rock music. The success of artists such as Macy Gray, D'angelo andBeck suggest that audiences are hungry for rock andsoul. That's my sound. I'm very excited for thefuture and where this music will lead me," Bolan cheers. The melodies are strong, the music is mysteriouslycharging.Check out Rolan Bolan. |
