    Artist description
Philo Beddo have transcended their former selves. Tastes be damned. Shed the hairshirts and flannel and jackboots of anger, snaked into the suede and leathers of a suburban wife-swapping party. It took a few rotations of the line-up, certainly. But the nucleus, guitarist Bryan Clark, remained the same. He’s the svengali behind the curtain. Using musicians as clothes to dress up the sound of his vision. His music. And what a show-stopping fashion-show he’s got running down rock-and-roll’s catwalk!Philo Beddo’s 2001 EP, “Why” is the first album released by Bryan Clark and Company since 1995’s eponymous debut. The lyrics are more humorous, production values are up a few notches, and the atmospheric tension is aces. Some of the songs are over before you want them to be, such as the beautiful “Jenna Claire”. Others are a blueprint, one hopes, for future efforts, such as the hard-jazz-pop of the title track. But, underneath all the lush playing and sensuous singing, there still lingers something of the sinister which I can’t put my finger on…and has brought me back to my headphones many times, trying to pinpoint it. -R.M. Artist History
Why is everything so damned dark when it comes to northwest rock bands? This was the question posed a decade ago when the media cast its’ spotlight on Seattle and her hairy, monster-rawk children.Philo Beddo was the baby left in the bathwater when the Tastes of American Youth decided to move on towards the candyass sweetness of bubblegum-pop music.Named for a rough-n-tumble bare-fisted boxer played by Clint Eastwood, Philo Beddo was a popular fixture on the college-frat circuit. Known for playing muscular covers of Rage Against the Machine songs, as well as their own brand of funk-rock-metal, Philo Beddo prefigured the testosterone-rage of the late ‘90’s, as early as 1995. But people change. Time mellows. And time rewards change, and the mellow survive longer, happier than the red-faced meat-eaters. -R.M. Morrow
