Musical Influences
Standing in a place's and listening to places, spaces and conductors [not what you may think I mean.] whether it be filled with activities of various creatures, or a field with only wind and grass, there is always something to be listened to. Some people have never heard the sound of their own mind. Tangents. How multi-directional noises can calm it self into the sounds of Silence. [Some place's never become quiet.] Wind in most places is the conductor. Listening to energy move through a room and how it creates pops and snaps in various objects, which are 2 things, your thoughts/voice being answered and the living and or the dead communicating with you from afar or near. [ I am putting together a recording of this but it will be quite awhile, before it is finished.] as a child my inspiration came from bieng left to myself to inspect my suroundings like electrical wires humming [which i am sure is not good for my health] when my parents and I would drive somewhere and we would pass under wires while listening to the radio and hearing the radio shift into statics was a definant help. The droning of water & insects i find to be very similar, I often wonder if they sing to each other or are just another example of learning from observing. Listening to trees sway, creak; leaves falling i find to be uh audiovisual plus. And the mating habits of various living species. people/guides/artists not in any order just people in a similar line who have made an impact on me in one way or another: Jim O'rourke, Sergei Parajanov . Artist History
[i call this the really brief history VER. 201]Born Everett, Washington. left when i was 2. Moved down to southern california, i Grew up in the same desert hole outside of lost angeles that captain beefheart grew up in.wandered around, circles for awhile or was it un oval? my mother was in and out of mental hostpitels, this occoured after her father death and was also the result of sexual and pyshical abuse from family members and the building of frustration when she told her own mother and she denied it, and also other fuchs that have not helped her it gets worse and worse trying to relate or love others, i hate this human trait. my father having to work and my mother was in the hostpital i wasn't able to be watched, so i was stuck in foster homes for year cause my dad listened to my mom's quack [dr. pilli- hows that for irony}[that is how his name is said not spelt:] ] , like kurosawa said of a quack that crossed him, " i'd love to shoove pine needles into his throat" , i got out but was not the same,we lived in a roach infested hotel after my dad was layed off from rockwell/boieng and he gambled the rest away in las vegas. this was on account to desert storm, [thanks BuShit] my dad frantic and stuggling had a heartattack, and had triple bi-pass surgrey. i got hooked on drugs, lost alot things, people, comprehansion and will.. moved to washington, got them back slightly., came back to southern california, watched my mother gets worse, then she was hit by a car and died from her ribs puncturing her lungs everyone of vertabrae was broken and head trauma, the woman who hit her cept driving and was pulled over, she has become a born again christian and i do believe she was not paying attention, but i forgave her though i wish she hadn't become born again, and i can say well every one pays for what they do [directly and indirectly]. [what did my mother have to pay for???why did she have to die??? i believe freedom is a form of payment for those who have suffered for many years.] and i believe my actions also contributed to my mothers death it was in part to my mistreatment, neglect and resentment to her , for who she was. and that was troubled and the wrong people used her for thier own diseased reasons, she has never been loved properly i supose except for me, before i became lost myself growing up in this burning world, i did and do love her, i just couldn't help her cause she wouldn't listen to me she believed the nonsense that doctors and other people in or around mental hostpitals told her. well upon hearing of her death i fell apart, and now i have pieced my self as much as i can ... back together...2 1/2 years later. i have made what i have made for reason i deeply believe in. and you may think i am way too personal but everything i have had to live though is in and what my art is made of. |

James,
I know you are on the road as of now but I am inspired to give you an initial response to your new songs regardless. (Pretzles for W Jr. on his b-day and ruby glass factory).
There is a dynamism with melody in relation to abrasion that you are developing to precision with these recordings, especially the "pretzles" piece.
It has the pervasive nuance of drapes as they are bellowed out into a room and then sucked sharpley back against a window. It is down right eerie comrade.
What I think you have really nailed in this recording is the transpositional, synesthetic cyborg reality of the way the electrical and mechanical can meld and manipulate the organic or acoustic.
This is something that no doubt is a major preoccupation, whether unconscious or not, (or perhaps at this point I am just giving an interpretation)
but the way you like to put emphasis on the interaction of kinetic, charged, electrically based technology that pervades our environment with the organic material of human grey matter.
Or to go beyond that, the status of the human nervous system in general as it is interfaced with the appliance, the common domestic tool
(which extends all the way from the refrigerator to the television and computer) and how those interact fetishistically within the human organism and further the human psyche.
From here we may talk about emotion as it is tied into the highly electric system known as the nervous system: the tingling of the spine, the head rush, and even the erection.
How our sense of pleasure, desire and sustenance become intimately intertwined with a mechanised domestic realm to a point of hyper sensitivity, ESP, and of course the paranormal;
paranormal being essential in this understanding because the way that you choose to exercise the concept is transgressive of the real and of the "normal".
This is where it all becomes political as well, whether we take all of this as analogy or experience, what is apparent is an eccentric methodology that has self theorized its aesthetic.
Through this self theorizing you have denaturalised the presence of the organic and made it frightening. This is done is through deconstructing the aural binary between those sounds which are natural and those which are commonly regarded as natural.
You are continuing a project that is underway in the music of many electroacoustic performers, one that immediately comes to mind is David Tutor and his neuron/synapse pieces (I am forgetting the exact title right now),
as well as Gunter, Wehowsky and Marchetti, but whether they have the political self awareness that you have is questionable. I like the allusion to Herzog's Heart of Glass because in that film he completely denaturalizes the human gesture, pose, manner of speaking, and _expression.
Once the inherent artifice in so called "reality" is layed bare, perhaps then we will all discover and locate ourselves within the actual pervasive and humming mechanism and take action to make George see the salt on his own pretzle so that his heart will freeze,
his factories on fire and his cabinent running to the shoreline frantic with the hurdy gurdies playing on the air. When the goose is left to its own devices will we be the unshakeable card players?
Love,
Leslie

here is the question; is art an immitation of life, or is life an
immitation
of art?
if the first is true, then we can only assume the world is riddled with
dualities of
positive and negative, light and dark, quality and quantity.
if the latter is true, it has been artists that have shaped the course
of
civilization and culture
since the dawn of expression.
in either case, the artist must attain a balance between self and
medium.
at some point the artist must be his art and his art must be him.
i am grateful that we live in a world where artists may not be the
first to
complain,
but are definately the first to do something about making things
better.
when you defy the conventions of the times, you create your own times.
now should most definately be the time of human abstract.
there is a subtle, brutal honesty in his work that demands not only to
be
heard but to be FELT.
as for the first question, only the audience may decide their own
answers.

Hiya james,
Just writing to speak in words (a sort of symbolic
tongue in cheek). Please excuse the incoherence, but
its past my usual bedtime and saki intake. I listened
to the cd medley/care package that you gave me (sorry
for the flake out). Overall some very exceptional
stuff! Really dug the Captain/Waits sound. There
seemed to be a lot of humor and self-analysis going on
in the lyrics, and the looped collage effect really
captured that beefart flavor. Sounds that stuck out
were "Make you believe you started now" which seemed
particularly "trippy", and "escape from Av".
"Escape..." was off the wall, really loud and sort of
hit me like a fazor on stun (the bonus talking samples
gave me that indie-rock-in-crowd-head-rush). I also
liked what you did with our improve pow wow. Much more
percussive then I remembered...but I really like how
the reeds blend in and out. I wish that your guitar
was more audible throughout the entire piece, but it
seems that your playing mingles with the looped
percussion, which adds and camoflauges it quite
nicely. I think I would like to compare your surgeons
touch with the original tapes, or maybe play them both
at the same time (ala Ornettes double quartet). Love
the choice of title by the way. Finally, the final
piece on your sampler platter is quite beautiful. The
sound captures that moment between restlessness and
comatose (which covers a lot of ground). Very Steve
Roden like... but hey, art is in essence a homage to
what got us out of bed (unless of course you record in
bed). I really hope to hear more. I'll be passing your
disc along to tim and corbin soon. Again, kudos and
two snaps up!

Very personal and effective self expression. Some very nice guitar
work, and a refreshing lack of overt polish. Non-rushed... giving the
material time to develop on it's own terms. Glad to see you're still
making music James.

hey, we met in that shitty "Indie Rack" chat room. so i look here not
knowing what to expect, but i am very happy with the outcome, your art
has the power to change to course of human progression (potentially).
But, lets not get ahead of ourselves. if i can figure out how to send
my paintings online i will do it. thanks for talking to me! keep in
touch! long live agent Dale Cooper, but only if Bob isnt with him.

This is Robert your friend in the UK.
I have not forgotten our conversations from way back still, and would
like
very much to continue reviewing your work. I have listened extensively
to
Elemental Drive. In addition, I have been listening to Paert, Messaien,
Kraftwerk, Radiohead and pieces by the Rock of Travolta and 5uu's. It's
still me!
Have you heard Amnesiac yet? I heard Pulk and Spinning Plates and
thought of
you. Spinning plates is a masterpiece.
Mail me back!
I have another short clip, better than the last in my opinion, which i
made
from me singing, humming, clicking my tongue and hitting a piano lid
very
hard! Ah, the resources we have to put up with, eh? LOL In addition, I
have
some pictures I drew, dunno how you are on art though.
Stay creative, eagerly awaiting your reply.
Robert :-)

phased out and distorted. i thought that was bad ass. anyway let me know when
you put more stuff up there so i can check it out. later, devin

Hi James--
Thank you so much for your kind words/thoughts regarding my music. It
means
alot to me to be able to reach somebody in the ways you desribed.
Having
checked out your site and stations I am AMAZED at the depth and breadth
of
your music and tastes! There's alot there to take in, but you
definitely
turned me on to a bunch of new stuff... and that's what it's all about
I
think. I'll definitely keep you posted re: playing in LA or even up
here.
I'm trying to be more diligent re: my calendar section.
Anyway, take care and keep in touch!
