    Artist description
The saying, ‘the whole is greater than the sum of all it’s parts’ holds true—especially concerning Central PA’s musical group SIMPLYd.. D’Laine Evans, Steve Davis, and Billy Weyforth are the versatile, talented and experienced singers/songwriters/performers in this acoustic-based adult rock trio who reflect this philosophy. All three members sing, but it’s D’Laine’s stellar vocals and Steve’s aggressive and expressive guitar work that are the soul of their music. Adding tight two and three-part harmonies with Billy’s solid bass guitar and D’Laine’s tasteful percussion creates the large energetic sound that is extremely entertaining to a wide range of listeners.SIMPLYd incorporates their original acoustic adult-rock with an eclectic repertoire of upbeat and creatively arranged songs ranging from classic rock, R&B, blues & jazz, and modern rock, performing in many different venues throughout the Central PA area for over 5 years, SIMPLYd plays the intimate club and restaurant setting to larger outdoor venues, fairs, weddings, etc., either as a duo, trio, or a full band.

'Surrender review in the October Fly Magazineby Thomas SmithSurrender is a well-crafted collection of nine songs that showcases the talented Lancaster-based duo's versatility and ability to artistically communicate with an audience.Simply D consists of D'Laine "Dee" Evans on vocals and percussion and Steve Davis on guitars, vocals, bass, and percussion. Both Evans and Davis agree that "seeing how far we could take the songs" was the most exciting part of recording Surrender. There's something for everyone on this recording. Obvious in quality and presence, Evans often- sultry vocals are the first layer that draws the listener in. Next, it's Davis on guitar providing the musical foundations through a variety of melodic flavors, modal textures, and primary rhythmic content. Perhaps the most refreshing aspects of Surrender's appeal lie in the tight arrangements, excellent quality of recording, and the intelligent lyrical content. The CD begins with the title track "Surrender" Voted No. 7 out of 6,000 entries in a worldwide trade competition, this cut starts things out right. Upbeat jazzy acoustic guitar rhythms from Davis, combined with Evan's bluesy vocals, provide the vehicle constructed to transport a personal message. Although Evans and Davis have been playing this song live for three years, its rightful place as the title track of the CD also ties into what Evans calls a "Spiritual-going after what you feel-having the faith-surrendering to the music kind of theme that emerged while in the studio. The track also features very accomplished electric lead guitar work by Davis."Ocean of Time" is a Davis composition about drifting aimlessly without purpose. Its somewhat mystical style as well as Davis' vocals reminds the listener of vintage Dave Mason and conjures the appropriate imagery. Davis' influence is also very evident on "Faith" which is a fast-moving and skillfully percussive solo acoustic guitar piece. In talking with Evans and Davis, one gets the impression that they approach their craft in a very honest and self-expressive manner. Two songs in particular best exhibit this trait. "Inside My Heart" is an Indigo Girls-like ode to friendship that endures a lifetime of many changes. "Just a Dream" is a socially conscious and self-reflective treatment of assessing one's role within the larger context of the world, as we know it. In both cases, Evans clearly communicates her message via a strong vocal performance.Perhaps the most refreshing quality of Simply D is that the music stands on its own and doesn't try to be what it's not. It's simply not one thing, and it's simply not another. But it is Simply D.Copyright © 2000 BarFly Monthly. All Rights Reserved
