    Press Reviews
Blessed with a voice that could melt you while singing the telephone book, Rock'n'Reel England (May 1996)A vivacious, bubbly, gentle, entertaining woman is about the most apt description for Fil Campbell, The Word, (Jan 95)Northern Irish singer Phil Campbell has assembled a fine collection of songs, Dirty Linen USA (October 1996)Dreaming has the mantle of the interpreter as its core but there are a few surprises present, none more so than the self-penned title track. A series of recurring images in dreams roughly relating to pre-ceasefire Northern Ireland, Dreaming crosses the thin line between hopes and despair. One hopes for more next time from her pen, such is its success rating, Folk Roots(October 1996)Celtic Connections Fil Campbell Band Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow, This concert in the Strathclyde Suite opened with a set from the Irish singer-songwriter Phil Campbell, accompanied as ever by her husband, Tom McFarland, and a newer addition to the band, guitarist John Johnson. The singer has been working on new material since her last visit to Scotland, and gave several songs what she described as their first airing to an English speaking audience. They were typically well crafted and serious in intent, covering subjects like the divided society of Northern Ireland in Separate Truths and the breakdown of a relationship in It's Hard To Walk Away, sung with a pleasingly sweet, light touch. Her voice is well suited to intimate material, but she was also able to rise in convincing fashion to the challenge of Nina Simone's quietly epic I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free, Kenny Mathieson, Glasgow Herald, Jan 99.
