BARZELL / DISCENTER "The Valley 8" By Kerry Ann Lee 28th Febuary 2001 Every now and then the Wellington underground music scene requires a kick in its baggy low-slung pants. These two bands hailing from the Hutt Valley are here to administer. This is their swansong, eleven tracks which do justice to their live performances. Huttcore heroes BARZELL get you rocking to their surging guitars and melodic vocals reminiscant of bands like Quicksand and Farside. I like track five the best. There's nice clean build-ups to an emotionally driven sound through memorable guitaring and well paced drumming, proof of the musicianship of a band, which after all these years has arrived at a signature sound. Next up meet Huttcore thugs DISCENTER. We're now on the seamier side of the tracks with thicker, more chug guitars and emotional vocals. There's a Swedish hardcore influence (Breach, Refused). "Bleeding on the Outside" and "Defaced" are both good metal-influenced hardcore tunes. Towards the end they throw in some jazz moments, paying homage to tech metal like Meshuggah and Dillinger Escape Plan. Shoe-tapping, shand-clapping fun times, give Discenter a few more seasons in the abyss and they'd be really whoopin' ass and taking names. Look out for these kid's new project The Valley Five. This is a good recording worthy of heavy rotation. Rock n' mothafuckin roll!!!
