Cobalt
Bison’s loud shrieking feedback guitars ended a long day that had begun in the DJ booth of CiTR with shrieks of a slightly different sound by Diamanda Galas. All things go in cycles. Bison put on a pretty amusing little show at the Cobalt, Saturday night, opening for Lunchbucket. It was an extremely loud, energetic show for the 60 or so people there—a decent turnout for the Cobalt. I got the feeling that even if I had worn earplugs it wouldn’t have mattered, as the thrashy assault on my hearing would have still left its impact.
They’ve just evicted their former singer (well, in the case of Bison, screamer might be more accurate), so vocals were mostly done by guitarist Kreg Saturn, whose demented guttural barking of indecipherable lyrics matched the noisiness of their short whirlwind paced songs perfectly—some of which were only about 10 seconds long. Also taking up some of the vocal slack was bassist Jaymz 666, who has a more “traditionally punk” (if there is such a thing) sneering voice on their song “I Don’t Care,” which my friends and I agreed was the highlight of the set.
The show had lots of humorous moments too—from Saturn calling Jaymz the prettiest one in the band (which is certainly true), and discussions of which band member smells the best, to songs with lyrics like “Let’s all roll around in the wet spot!” All in all, Bison put on a fun, fast, furious show that punks in Vancouver will enjoy immensely. - Vampyra Draculea

5 song demo CDR
Some days I wander as if in a daze – searching, hopelessly searching for a band that would satisfy my desire to hear the best of NYC. scum and west coast sludge all in one nice tight package. I despaired; as it was unlikely the two would never meet. But then as if in a twist of fate much like an old Reece’s peanut butter cup commercial … you know “You got your scuzz on my sludge. You got your sludge on my scuzz.. etc,” the two have been blissful intertwined by a thick neck buncha yahoos named BISON! Made up of five Vancouverites with the unlikely names of Wood, Saturn, Golf, Mayer and Krusty (aka Nagaski Fondue - Smiling Nihilist - Rob Dickson) the band ain’t trailblazin’ but is certainly in fine form when swingin’ and flingin’ out prime doses of thug rock. The disc starts off with a plodding, low-end dirge cum punker blast circa ’82 and rides a high wave of retarded brilliance ‘til the very end. Other than the incredibly unfortunate “Wet Spot,” the entire disc spins out the same intensity, hostility, and fuck you attitude, that made Black Flag and the tragically drug damaged Flipper so amazing. All the sunshine up the ass aside, Bison is a five piece that sounds like a trio. Once they start to figure out how to capitalize on all the noise potential, these guys will be thoroughly crushing. Worth checking out for sure. (Devil Pact 666 Records, bisonband@excite.com) -Criz Spaceman |
