Press Reviews
The best thing about Starlet (aside from the celestial voice of a hypnotic female singer) is their comprehensive understanding of space and time in the realm of good songwriting. To write them off as a No Depression or Alt Country act would be a shortcut to cerebral activity. Their sound is a droning, stony, transmundane and varied collection of California Country Rock songs and outer-space sea shanties that seem to inadvertantly dip into the rich tapestry of West Coast cosmic American music. The male/female harmonies crystallize over cerulean drops of musical notes bent lightly from a skilled master of the pedal steel. Where most young Americana bands encompass a tired mixture of the Replacements with the Burritos, Starlet are more akin to playing what seems to come naturally, without any of the derivitive and overdone y'allternative twang found in almost every Midwestern suburban town. Perfect music for tokin' under the stars of the Cap Rock desert sky. Eric S. listen.com |
