    Artist description
The band's songs are rooted in a pop tradition, though not necessarily formed in a conventional structure. The music, as heard on their album, Flags for Unknown Territories, has a quiet intensity that is subversive in its approach and undeniable in its effect.

    Artist History
Saturnine formed in New York City in the fall of 1993. Matt Gallaway (guitar/lead vocals) was then working as a private investigator on a case involving several art objects that were reported missing soon after their delivery to a warehouse in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. As part of the investigation, Matt was required to visit the Egyptian collection at the Brooklyn Museum, where he met Jennifer Baron (guitar/vocals), an instructor in the Museum's education department. Jennifer was already playing music with Mike Donofrio (bass), whom she had met a few months earlier when he moved into her old apartment on the edge of Chinatown in lower Manhattan. It turned out that Mike and Matt had been introduced in 1991 by Matt's cousin. Mike had also played music a few times with Jim Harwood (drums) after Jim contacted Mike about an architectural project. Although Matt and Jim went to the same college in upstate New York, they did not meet until Jim agreed to play drums for the band. Jennifer recently left the band to devote time to Ladybug Transistor.

    Press Reviews
From the pages of the CMJ New Music Report, Issue: 585 - Aug 31, 1998The third full-length from New York drone-pop quartet Saturnine, Mid The Green Fields, like the band's previous outings, makes its mark through musical restraint, subtlety and attention to the smallest details. Lead vocalist/guitarist Matt Galloway's drowsy, restless voice colors the band's music with hazy hues, while his picturesque lyrics tell emotion-filled tales that sound like excerpts from a dream. Each song is meticulously accented with tasteful musical details such as flugelhorn.
