Artist description
It is said that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, NSS, the eternal pessimist, likes to believe it is killing him. After over 13 years of being successful at failure, the thought of packing it up and calling it a day is getting more and more attractive. The problem is, if he does call it quits, he will then proceed to blow his brains out.He chooses to go by his initials rather than his given name, Noel Stefan Stoyanoff, for fear that it would be butchered because he isn’t in a big time band like Chris Novoselic. He is a singer, songwriter, storyteller, in demand studio and live bassist for hire, DJ, cynic, human rights activist, music evangelist, music historian, music collector and is by no means a slouch. Along with numerous performances across the United States either solo or performing with others, and an eight album discography, including three of his own, he has a mission...to make the world a better place to live, through the aid of music.Stylistically he is hard to pin down. His first disk, Mr. Handpuppet Man & Other Campfire Favorites, met with mixed reviews. Either you liked it or you hated it. You couldn’t be on both sides of the fence with an album that quickly changes from country to techno, ambient spoken word to accapella gospel and all points in between. Eclectic is a useful adverb, but due to it’s over use, along with the word alternative, it has been deemed by the arrogant one himself as too commonplace of an description for a man who refuses to be categorized, bracketed, nailed down, pin pointed or sheparded into a group with others. His 1998 sophomore effort, Have You Met Edna?, heavily influenced by 1970’s country and southern rock and highlighted by the hit Please Don’t Set Me Up With Your Ugly Friends (a song he hardly ever plays live) met with positive response from critics and fans alike. Choosing an older, warmer analog sound rather than a harsher, digital, modern sound, NSS matured with age, cathartic refinement and shear determination.Beat-Up Old Ugly Cynical & Live is the title of his latest release or it might be what NSS sees when he looks into the mirror. Recorded live on his 30th birthday and the next step in his musical progression, it is a perfect snap shot of his solo acoustic performances. Rather than another full band album with more foot stomping, happy go-lucky numbers, NSS strips himself down to the bare minimum and lets you have it. Though the live cuts are filled with jokes and typical NSS ramblings, it’s the two bonus studio tracks, recorded quickly and sparingly in conjunction with the overall sonic feel of the album, I Don’t Care If You Go To Hell (Just Don’t Take My Daughter Down There With You) and I Don’t Care If We’re Blood, that hit you like round kick to the groin. Here we get to see the dark side of a man who, in the past has laughed at his life, deliver such blows of anger and hatred to his child’s mother and his own mother that you are caught between feeling sorry for the guy or wanting to throw his indignant ass off a cliff. So how would you describe his musical direction? Well, according to the Julia Child cook book: take a little Frank Zappa, add a generous portion of the Allman Brother’s Band, throw in a dash of Harry Chapin, mix thoroughly with the essence of King Diamond, chill, distill and serve with a slice of attitude on the side.I believe you’ll find his passion and skill are ingeniously showcased within his creations. NSS has carved out a niche that seems to defy the increasingly transitory musical environment we find ourselves in. NSS is the real item. One of a kind. Always provocative, certainly entertaining, never boring, NSS has begun his slow, steady march to conquer the world in the name of music. One by one, the people he encounters are swept up and ultimately won over by his honesty, wit, charm and his devotion to music. Even people who don’t usually have strong opinions, agree about this...”Love him or hate him, you simply can’t ignore him”. |
