It ain't southern rock, so it must be Northern CountryWest Michigan band creates own brand of 'Northern country'( J BILIDDINGS Muskegon Chronicle Staff Writer"Northern country" applies doubly to The Gordon Thayer Band.Regionally speaking, it is where the West Michigan "Outlaw Country" band does most of its playing. In artistic terms, "Northern country" describes the take front man Thayer, Duane Noom,Mike Simpson and Ron Hovingh give to their own, original music. It also suggests the regional ring with which The Gordon Thayer Band covers hits of artists like The Marshall Tucker Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, Bob Seger and even artists of the 1950s and '60s. Just don't call it Southern rock."I like to more or less refer to it as Northern music," Thayer said. "We're not from the South so we don't play country music like they used to play it down there.”"They call it Southern rock down there so up here I guess you'd call it Northern country. I've always figured that Michigan is a rock-and-roll state anyway."The Gordon Thayer Band also plays music of folks like Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. In one sense, the band has more in common with those stars than it would care to.Thayer himself prefers to age himself no more specifically than "over 40," with good reason. The ad hoc ageism evident in country music radio tends to get any artist with a few wrinkles precious little air play.Cuts from the bands' debut CD of original music, "Gotta Do Whatcha Gotta Do," have gotten some exposure on stations in Fremont and Grand Rapids, Thayer said, but forget about it nationally."What I'm seeking right now is management or an independent label that can grab that and market it," Thayer said in a telephone interview from his Rockford home.Otherwise, the best way to check out The Gordon Thayer Band will be this weekend in Muskegon. The band will play Friday and Saturday at Little Texas, 2411 Hall. The band will sell copies of the CD there. The Gordon Thayer Band has made an impression in this rock-and-roll state. In 1997, The Gordon Thayer Band was a state finalist in the Jimmy Dean/True Value Hardware Country Showdown.Thayer originally founded the group as the J.T. & The Justin Tyme Band, and over the years changed various musicians. Thayer remains the front man and lead singer and guitarist. He is a veteran West Michigan musician who, when it came to producing a CD, was able to call on an old and talented friend.Edgar Struble, the former music director for Kenny Rogers and now in the same capacity for an upcoming television series for The Oak Ridge Boys. Under Struble's watchful eye and ear, part of the "Gotta Do Whatcha Gotta Do" was recorded in Grand Rapids, part in Nashville.Having a CD out is great, Thayer said, but the best way to enjoy his band is to catch it live."This latest release of original music is just the tip of the iceberg," he said. "People really need to see us."
