Artist description
Ten Directions, a Baltimore-based jazz ensemble, released its’ first CD, entitled Swept Away. Swept Away features the haunting original compositions by renowned pianist, Clem Ehoff. This return to traditional jazz stylings makes for a refreshing body of work, which displays the diverse talents of the consortium members. Recorded at the nationally celebrated Sheffield Studios in Phoenix, Maryland, Swept Away, is being touted as an exceptional contribution to contemporary jazz. The title track, Swept Away, is presented in two distinct versions (1:8:04, 5:7:31). The opening song is a samba-inspired instrumental, with Jamey Nocks’ flugelhorn carrying the beautiful melody. The melody is repeated and lyricized with the soulful vocals of Karen Braithwaite on the fifth track. Swept Away serves as the musical centerpiece of the entire work: magical, haunting, passionate! A syncopated gentle latin beat can be heard on Delicado (7:8:53), Almost a Samba (3:5:32) and the lively Frijoles (6:6:46), a spicy scat and piano duet. Borderline (2:3:08) is a driving jazz-cut that demonstrates the bands’ solo capabilities. The upright bass solo and the classic jazz drum are reminiscent of the true jazz legends. Erik (4:6:34) is a sweet and catchy tribute that shows the ensembles innocent playfulness. The passionate and inspired phrasing of Clem Ehoff’s piano comes to life on Snowflake (9:5:14).Founded by Ed Fotheringill, Ten Directions is a consortium of accomplished jazz musicians. The talent and versatility of the band members is demonstrated by the variety of musical styles they perform: traditional jazz, swing, be-bop and blues. Ten Directions features a vocalist of immeasurable talent. Karen Braithwaite has dazzled audiences across the United States and abroad. Ms. Braithwaite has an incredible stage presence that is a credit to her flawless vocal technique and phrasing. Represented by Silver Spring, Maryland-based production company, Way It Oughtabe Productions, Ten Directions provides a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience. |
