Artist History
What it was?Raised in the bayou city, Rick Nelson was born out of the sundry civilization that is Houston. At age 12 he received his first six-string. And after three painfully laboring lessons it was obvious that his natural gift needed to come out. Left to his own resources he fashioned a style that is synonymous with our forever changing culture. After graduation, Rick found himself in Europe and was exposed to a multitude of musical experiences unlike those of his rhythm and blues upbringing. Interchanging an old Funk with a new Rock. An earthy Blues with a soulful Pop. After working as a neo-new-wave-post-punk-psuedo-skinny-tie-wearing-wannabe bass player/guitarist, he discovered his voice as the lead vocalist of a band doing pop/jazz covers. It wasn't until after those experiences that Rick realized the "whole show" was there inside of him. The ability to write, play, sing, and perform were echelons yet to be exploited. What it is?Now living and performing in Austin, he has blended his experiences and musical backgrounds to create a fresh twist on the pop-theme. As a solo artist, Rick appeals to a diverse group, from Gen-X to Gen-Next. This discernable style is indistinguishable by comparison. His writing and performances are influenced by the rocking soulful quirkiness of the likes of Lenny Kravitz and the lyrical-wit of Elvis Costello, fused by the urbane pop-jazz of Steely Dan or the bluesy stylings of Keb Mo. Hummable hooks, infectious melodies, and a metropolitan sophistication are eminent in his performance as well as recordings. There is a thunderous excitement to his full-band performance, which is craftily contrasted by the accessibility and sincerity of his soulful solo acoustic show |
