Artist History
Originally from Ruffsdale, Pennsylvania, Dan Long is a graduate of Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, Oberlin, Ohio, where he studied organ with Prof. Garth Peacock. His Bachelor of Music degree, received in 1987, was awarded for majors in Pipe Organ Performance and Electronic & Computer Music Composition.
After graduation, Dan changed his residence to New York City where he became Director of Music and Organist at Church of St. Stephen of Hungary. Soon after, a research and development position in t he Electronic Keyboard Division of the Yamaha Communication Center preempted him from working in the church music field, however by 1989 he was "back at the console."
Dan was Assistant Organist at Church of the Holy Family, the United Nations Parish, fro m 19 92 until 1994. In 1994, he became Interim Director of Music and Organist at St. Joseph's Church in Greenwich Village. Since 1995, he has been Organist at Third Church of Christ, Scientist, located at 63rd Street and Park Avenue. Services are on Wedne sdays at 7:30 P.M., and Sundays at 11:00 A.M. and 4:30 P.M.
In 1993, Dan began performing in recital regularly. He has appeared in New York City on the recital series of Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, Saint Peter's Church, and Grace Church. Dan has also appe ared on the Wondrous Wednesdays organ recital series at Union Chapel, Oak Bluffs, on Martha's Vineyard. On March 29th, 2001, he appeared in recital at St. Paul's Chapel, Columbia University, New York City.
Dan has written and recorded classical, rock, easy listening, and experimental music. In addition to J.S. Bach, his influences/idols include Keith Emerson, Eddie Van Halen, Elton John and Jean-Michel Jarre. He is currently writing and recording music for distribution on the Internet as well as locally on CD.
