Artist description
Adam Stockton- African percussion; Rebecca Owings- Flute; Jack Shannon- Acoustic Guitar, Rhodes, VocalsChorduroy brings jazz textures to folk music. With simple, organic instrumentation: acoustic guitar, flute, and african percussion, Chorduroy breathes with spacious arrangements and varied styles. From the bossa-nova inspired, "Only the Names Have Changed" to the simple folk stylings of the light, satirical piece, "Hooville Waltz", and to the playfully funky "Judy Jetson," Chorduroy runs the gamut of songwriting styles. Though it is often hard to categorize Chorduroy's music, its members have tried to simplify their genre as much as possible. Guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter for the group, Jack Shannon explains, "We're a folk band--we're not in the tradition of Joan Baez, or Arlo Guthrie, but we approach our music in an organic way." Often improvising lyrically and melodically, Chorduroy prides itself on its live show. "When Jack and I used to play in Where the Sidewalk Ends, [Richmond, VA-based groove rock band] we were working on some of Jack's more subtle songs--songs that didn't fit with what Sidwalk was doing. Now we have simplified, and have a great outlet for our 'coffee shop' materiel." Shannon adds, "It's no longer a 'play-by-committee' situation; we can make up a seque on the spot and keep going." Sets of Chorduroy shows have been known to link twenty or more songs together without stopping. "Now that we know what we're doing, it's just natural to work out intros and segues," Shannon says.Chorduroy is currently working on their first demo with producer Tommy Hamilton, and more songs will be available here as they are completed. |
