Press Reviews
Verrueckt is the musical creation of one man by the name of Babis. Now Babis has only been writing music for some 6 months from his biography's depiction and in such a short time- this man has shown us a melodic and upbeat feel to his creation. Currently no CD appears to be available from Verrueckt but I'm hoping that Babis does something to change this soon and hopefully add some vocals to the project to flesh it out some more. So with no more delay - here's my dissection of the sounds sculpted by Verrueckt.
A Galaxy So Far Away
Rather splendid production for what appears to be demos of songs are what you should first notice with Verrueckt. A galaxy... displays some very basic melodies - but what beauty is encapsulated in this song! the sweeping synths perfectly complement an arpeggiated synthesizer splendidly. Musically there's a touch of the magnificent Wolfsheim here giving the track a slight Germanic feel. (not surprising as Babis has been situated in Germany before his relocation to the east coast of America).
Ambience In Mind
A lot more harsher than Galaxy. Personally I didn't find too much to write home about here. A bit too repetative for my likings. Some tasty drumbeats - but apart from that there's not too much going on here. May be good for the die hard technoheads who just love a song for the beat - but personally for me I like to hear a bit more depth in music, than the odd ambient note sitting atop a frantic kick and snare.
Beyond The Blue Skies
Big on analogue sweeps again with this track. Again I'm undeniably brought to think of the wonderful Woflsheim (though I hate comparing this band to that band) but a lot of the monophonic ryhthms with Verrueckt do have more than a passing resemblence to the works of Hepner and Reinhart of said German band. Still - there is plenty of enough originality here too, and I can't believe this guy is so new to writing music with such a natural ear for good harmonies and interesting drumpatterns as opposed to the ubiquitious, head rolling thud of the dancefloor that I personally find to be nothing short of unimaginative. Once again - really good clear production with this track. I'm just dying to hear these songs with someone on vocals though.
Happy Mellow
I'd have to class this one as sounding somewhat more like contemporary EBM with an extremely melodic edge. Though like with a lot of Verrueckt's work - it's simple in the fact that there aren't all that many changes in the songs giving them a more trance edge to them. But I'm pleased that Verrueckt know not to use overkill in the use of technology and making a song sound too disfunctional by giving it about 3000 different drumbeats going on at once, nor do they make their melodies and rythmic section too simple to drive you to sleep. Mellow this song ain't - but groovy it sure as hell is!
Monotony
Desipte the title giving you the false impression that this is actually a song by Sisters of Mercy (heh heh- or should that just be Agony? I dunno!) this is one extremely uptempo son of a gun! And the main riff is extremely catchy but simple yet again. This track could easily make it as a soundtrack to a computer game of some sort I think. Verrueckt is to the world of dark synthpop what Sash is to the world of mainstream dance. Accessible, talented, and inventive, a musician not afraid to break out of the mould of DJ style bollocks that is oh so present in today's gothic / darkwave / Synthpop nightclubs.
Not What It Seems
The intro to Seems is lushly laden with soaring strings that soon kick into another nifty little monophonic rythm section, this one has a far more commercial overtone to it though. Definately a more full on dancefloor feel to this one I feel. Some nice breaks in there too, to help make things a bit more interesting and as always - beautiful melody and nice crisp production.
Your Lips Are Moving
Babis informed me that this isn't his favourite composition to date, in it's own rights Your Lips..... is not a bad composition but lacks melodies and imagination a little - some extremely arpreggiated synths do keep the song busy - but it soon tend to get a slight irritating. A few clicks in there too tend to make me ponder and think if Babis intended for glitches to appear in the song - or if it is merely an overseen mistake. Not bad for a few listens but after a while I tend to feel a bit spaced out and reaching back to Monotony.
Your Lips Are Moving - Soy Futura Mix
Remixed by my good friend Saul Oliver - the man who likes to grope me when I play concerts with him (hee hee). Here Saul gives a more standard feel to Your Lips... that take the quirkiness away of the drums from the original version, but apart from this and a bit of a more wasp style dirty humming bass line I don't see all too much of a difference in the mixes. Still - Babis seemed to be greatly impressed with this remix, and after all , any musician should take pride in their work seriously before trying to please the public (those unsupportive monsters out there!).
I wish Babis all the luck in the future with Verrueckt, this person surely does have a bright future with a splendid mixture of synthpop, gothic, new wave, EBM, trance and dance. Though I really think a vocalist would be an excellent addition to the Verrueckt team, it doesn't dampen the spirit of a very talented instrumental project. Spiffy!
